this paper mainly aims at the contributions of our education and higher cducation tothe growth of the nationaI economy, meanwhile, pays close attention to the probIcms onthe cost and thc share of higher education in our country at present as well as thepersonal profits that are rclatcd to it.Based on the theories of the western authoritative scholars, this paper has reached aconclusion that,in the l990s, education in China has contributed to the growth of thenational economy by approximatcly l7.88%, of which l.586% camc from highereducation. At the same timc, according to thc relevant information from abroad andthe statistics obtained in this paper,it has made quite a reasonable comparison on thecontributions of elementary and higher education bctwecn fOreign countries and China, especially during the peoriod from the year of l964 to the year of l990. In addition, it hascombined the modcl of the calculation on the contributions to the economic growthwhich has been wideIy adoptcd in the world with quite a new idca fOr increasing theparametcr of the quaIity in cducation, including the education for aduIts andpostgraduates, thus creating quite a new model of caIculation in this field. What's more, in the Iight of the tWo predictions about thc city residents abiIities inallocation of thtir incomc per pcrson, innuenced by the ycarly increasing rate, this paperbas also madc a calculation in advancc fOr the undergraduatcs, on thc starting point ofthe cconomic, profitabIe stage after their graduation, and has drawn out a result that, nowadays, in China, the personal-inner-profit ratc of the undergraduate educationinvestment is only about 20% and l6.5%,lower than the average Ievel of othcr developingcountries. The reason is, obviously, as it can be sccn in the studies of the probIems on thetotaI cost in this paper, that the pcrcentage of the cost for the individuals is a bit toohigh.Anothcr positive result gained in this paper shows that in China the ycarly fixcdcost fOr training an undergraduate is less than Yl2,000 yuan nyhercas, fOr instance, thetuitions and the rcIated costs an of undergraduate of Grade 2000 shouId bear takes upnearIy 40% of the total, therefOre, thc so-caIIed saying of "onc quarter (25%)" does nottalIy with the fact - Howeven as is known to alI, the tuitions and the related costs forbigher education in most countries onIy take up less than 20% of the totaI fixed cost.Bcsides, the ratc of the yearly per caput income of thc residents both in urban and ruralareas cannot be ignored as well. So, taking all these into consideration, tuitions andrelated costs of higher cducation in China, as compared to that in other countries, isdefinitcly too cxpcnsive. For this reason, vigorous measures must be adopted to cut downthe personal cost and so as to solvc the financial problems of the students from Iow-ln'omc iamiiics.
