This dissertation presents an overall study of the disciplinary structure, taking the discipline as a central factor of the three-dimensional structure of science, higher education studies and society, in the multi-disciplinary perspective of education, sociology, Scientology, organization studies, discipline studies, and educational institution studies. The dissertation, taking the concept of discipline of multifold meanings as the logical starting point, develops its discussion of the university disciplinary structure, the disciplinary organization, the disciplinary institution, and the disciplinary culture in turn, with the employment of the historical method, the comparative method, the case-study method and the dialectical-logical method, aiming to bring the study of the university discipline to certain theoreticality and systematically..The discipline is a concept of multifold meanings. This dissertation takes its essential meaning, that is, the classification of academic knowledge, or the division of learning, and, on the basis of knowledge classification, defines the university discipline as the basic form that exercises the basic functions of the university with the in-depth special knowledge as its content, going further to an exposition of the features of the university discipline. The university discipline demonstrates its features in seven aspects: it displays properties of depth and specialization of its basic components; it displays features of structuralization, that is, it forms certain disciplinary structure; it works as the basis upon which the university exercises the three functions; it takes its orientation under the influence and decision of the tendency of human resources development; it attributes academic properties to its activities; it acquires both autonomy and collectivity; it advances as a natural motion decided by a variety of needs including the inner logic of the self-development of the discipline and requirements of the politics, economy and sci-tech of a country in different times.The university discipline displays features of structuralization, that is, it forms certain disciplinary structure. This dissertation, defines the university disciplinary structure as the making of the discipline and the correlation of disciplines in a university, examines the four stages of its development, and sketches the features of the disciplinary structure of some top universities outside of China, especially in America. The university discipline in China has been making the structural progress, first from plural to singular, and then back to multidisciplinary and comprehensive; and at present, stratums of universities and disciplines are gradually formed on the basis of the disciplinary levels, though the disciplinary structure displays a tendency toward homogenization. Some universities are constructing rational disciplinary structures with the basic science disciplines as the ground and the applied technology disciplines as the mainstay; whereas some other universities have unbalanced disciplinary structures, and disciplines without remarkable coordinated advancement. Therefore, the central task of Chinese universities, in the following years, is to bring the initiatives and originalities of the university runners into full play; is to direct coordinated development of the mutually related disciplines instead of pursuing full disciplinary coverage; is to observe tradition, to search for uniqueness, and to locate disciplinary potentialities. It is necessary that the adjustment and optimizing of the university disciplinary structure be conducted under the principles of adaptability, practicability, inter-generativity, diversity, andnorrimperativity.The university disciplinary organization is, the substantial presentation of the disciplinary structure, and the academic organization formed with disciplines as direct operational entities.
