The dissertation describes the whole process that the progressive edueation movement, which is one of the most important education movements in history, emerged,developed and finally disintegrated , on the basis of prossessing plenty of historical materials. It reflects authentically the richful varieties of the movement,brings to light its internal logcal changes,analyses its essential characteristics and announces its relationship with the development of modern education. The writer believes, as a unity imposed of various trends,the essence of the progressive education movement is that it was an all-round educational reform which took its shape in the background of modern urban-industrial culture. The aim of the reform was to liberate the children as much as possible and to promote progress of socoty by improving human nature. Since progressive education movement involved or raised a chain of essential general questions which modern education faced during its development and had preliminary attempts to resolve them, so it was a significant landmark in the history of modern education.
