Study On The Theories And Practice Of Metropolitan Suburb Development

Suburb, including built-up area around the urban center, is geographically located in the administrative region of a city, but outside of the urban center.Metropolitan suburb is an advanced stage of suburb development, as urban development is in the age of metropolitanization. Suburb around the urban center has become main development area in the metropolitan district, while the city is developing from single-center to decentralization The development of metropolitan suburb is taken more seriously, and it's of great importance to explore the theories and practice of metropolitan suburb development. This dissertation discusses on the development of metropolitan suburb, through the research on spatial structure evolution of suburb as well as its evolution pattern and the empirical analysis of Shanghai suburb development. With the systematic views and based on the analysis of the history, present situation and future of suburb development, the dissertation clarifies the formation and development of metropolitan suburb, its dynamic mechanism and spatial evolution pattern, so as to comprehensively reveal the spatial development of metropolitan suburb. Then the main way and pattern of metropolitan suburb development has been elaborated in this dissertation to explain the metropolitan suburb development and its developing way. Finally, the thoughts and ideas for resolving the current obstacles in the development of the suburb, based on the empirical analysis of Shanghai suburb development.The dissertation consists of eight chapters.The introduction is the first part of this context, which mainly explains the foundation and signification of choosing the title and the thoughts, the content, the methods and the areas of research. Chapter II is about the overview of metropolitan suburb development. In this part, the concept of metropolitan suburb development and its definition has been elaborated clearly, and metropolitan suburb development has been explained as well. Chapter III is about the basic theories of metropolitan suburb development, which introduces the relevant concept and theories of suburb development as the research basis. Chapter IV analyzes the suburb developing rule, character in each stage and dynamic mechanism from the view point of the system which is consisted in three parts: "city system" , "suburb system" and "country system" . Chapter V focuses on the analysis of the spatial evolution and developing rule of suburb, and reveals the point that the fusion of urban and rural area is the main spatial character of metropolitan suburb as well as the basis. Chapter VI summarizes the content, channels and pattern of metropolitan suburb development. Suburb development includes suburbanization and suburban urbanization, and has three achieving ways which are suburbanization, suburban urbanization and agricultural modernization. Chapter VII analyzes the spatial evolution of Shanghai suburb by elaborating on suburb's development process, present situation, motive force, achieving way and future problem. ChapterVIII discusses on "the Functional Zone" in Pudong New Area. Functional Zone is proposed to break the separating situation of urban and rural areas, and to contribute to the joint development of development zone and town. Through the analysis on three-year development of the Functional Zone, Chapter VII explores the development trend, pattern and developing way of urban-rural integration under the Functional Zone management, so as to give a practical basis and theoretical summing-up for breaking the separating situation of urban and rural areas. Chapter IX: Conclusion. The last part of the dissertation concludes the theoretical achievements and discusses some relevant issues and the direction in which further suudy will be carried on.The innovations of the dissertation lie in: With the systematic views and from the comprehensive view of urban, rural and suburban development, the dissertation sums up the theories of suburb development based on suburb evolution. The main developing ways of metropolitan suburb have been elaborated, which include suburbanization, suburban urbanization and agricultural modernization. This dissertation comprehensively expounds on Urban-Rural integral development in metropolitan suburb. And it also reveals that the metropolitan suburb character is urban and rural integration including structure and content, which is favorable to metropolitan suburb development. In this dissertation, Development Zone is verified as the main contribution to urban and rural integration, shortening the gap between urban and rural areas, through strengthening the economy and culture development. Innovations on administrative system are proposed to break the separating situation of urban and rural areas and promote the urban and rural integration.
