Abundant research results on the social identities of the international migrants and the native blue-collar migrants can be found, while the native white-collar migrants have almost attracted no attention. Based on data from the survey of urban new immigrants in Shanghai in 2007, this dissertation is an endeavor to explore the key issues, current situation, factors and structure of the social identities of the native migrants with the social identity theories and the social representation theory in social psychology and the ethnic identity theories in sociology.Chapter 4 suggests that there is no uniform dimension or definition on migrants'social identities in the present researches, so I focus on the social identification that is the individual's re-construction of the social identity. It is the changed life space reminds migrants the consciousness and conflict of their social identities, which should be continuously re-identified. This dissertation focuses on the culture identification, region identification, group identification, SES identification and career identification of the migrants. And the future research should pay attention to that for migrants, (1) social identification can't be reduced to culture identification; (2) the transformation of social identifications may vary from each other; (3) the social identifications are affected by the interaction of the rational reasons and the original complex; (4) they may have both marginal suffering and dual advantage.Chapter 5 is to discuss the present situation and concrete manifestation of the urban new immigrants'social identification. The results show that the urban new immigrants'social identification which from high to low are region identification, career identification, culture identification, SES identification and group identification is not high in overall level. The concrete manifestation is that they remain lagged behind in the cultural identification, reach a higher level in the regional identification, are inclined to stranger consciousness in group identification, tend to classify themselves in the middle layer or the middle-lower layer and prefer to upward identification in SES identity, and reach middle satisfaction from career identification.Chapter 6 is to analyze the System of Household Registration how to affect the social identifications of the urban new immigrants in the view of institutionalized repulsion. The results show that the System of Household Registration has significant effect on the urban new immigrants'social identification. The concrete manifestation is that: (1) the urban new immigrants who have Shanghai Household or Registration Card are higher than the others in culture identification, and there are no significant differences in the two former who feel admission rather than repulsion; (2) the less the urban new immigrants receive repulsion of the Household Registration System, the higher is the degree in region identification; (3) the institutionalized repulsion may lead the urban new immigrants to develop stranger identity; (4) Shanghai Household and Registration Card may reduce the probability of the lower layer identity of the urban new immigrants, and the former increase the middle and higher layer identity; and (5) the System of Household Registration has no significant effect on career identification.Chapter 7 is to discuss the effect of the objective SES on the visual angle of group status and individual position. The results show that the career status and income have significant effect on the urban new immigrants'social identification, but education level has no remarkable effect. The concrete manifestation is that: (1) the urban new immigrants with higher occupation status have higher social identifications than the others; (2) the same to those with more income in region identification, native identification, SES identification, and career identification; and (3) education level only positively affect the SES identification.According to the emotional features Chapter 8 presents social memory into commonsense memory, discrimination memory and supportive memory, respectively substituted by inhabit time, social distance and support from the native. The results show that different types of the social memory have different effect on the urban new immigrants'social identification. The concrete manifestation is that: (1) the longer the inhabit time is, the higher is the degree in culture identification, region identification and SES identification; (2) social distance plays a negative role on culture identification, region identification and career identification, but positive on SES identification; (3) the more support from the native the urban new immigrants get, the higher level are the culture identification and region identification; and (4) those with longer inhabit time, larger social distance and more support from the native is more likely identify neutral group identity than others.Chapter 9 is to address the relational structure model of the social identifications of the urban new immigrants. The results show that: career identification plays a positive role on SES identification and native identification the same to SES identification on region identification, region identification on culture identification and native identification, and native identification on culture identification, while career identification doesn't remarkably affect culture identification and region identification, nor SES identification on group identification and cultural identification; and residing plan has a positive correlation with local festival adoption and children developing expectation. At last, the main findings, contributions and reflections have been discussed, and future research directions also have been suggested.
