MCE Industry And Regional Economy Development

Modern meeting, conference and exposition (MCE for short) is defined as the activities, industry and economy that stem from and revolve around meetings and expositions, with economic globalization and infomationization as its backdrop. The core of MCE is MCE industry, which as a green industry is claiming growing attention worldwide. Since reform and openness, China has witnessed the rapid development of MCE industry, which plays an increasingly important role in the tertiary industry. According to The 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) for National Economic and Social Development, "MCE industry should be developed on the basis of the rational distribution of exhibition halls" . It indicates that the MCE industry has become a highlight in the national economic and social development.The MCE industry is space-dependent and region-selective. Recently various specialized and comprehensive international MCE activities have promoted interregional cooperation and exchange in technology, information, trade, human resources and culture, thereby profiting the economic and social development of the related regions. With the consensus that MCE industry can give publicity to the related regions and exert rippling effects in the optimization of regional industrial make-up, it is carrying weight with local governments. Over 30 regions and cities in China aim to be the "international exhibition center" or "regional exhibition center". Some of them, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Dalian and Chengdu, even have worked out plans for their own MCE industry and established the MCE association. Consequently a national MCE network is taking shape in China with the big cities as its center.
