With the coming of the era of knowledge economy, competition among enterprises, especially high-tech ones, is now based on knowledge resources. The competitions are no longer focused on final products of all kinds of industrial processes, but on outcomes of intellectual activities. Thus, innovation shall be put at the core of the strategy by all countries and enterprises who wish to win the economic competition in the 21st century. There are a variety of forms of innovation, which of high-tech enterprises is increasingly manifested as comprehensive innovation. It is necessary for high-tech enterprises to carry out sustained comprehensive innovation activities so as to maintain their competitive edge.A full-fledged comprehensive innovation system for high-tech enterprises should be centered with technical innovation, oriented towards economic benefits, social benefits and ecological benefits (i.e. the three achievements), and regulated towards the effectiveness balance between the inner and outer environments of the system. By coordinated interaction among technical innovation, system innovation, management innovation, marketing innovation and knowledge innovation, sustained competitive edge can be achieved in high-tech enterprises, which will provide impetus for their innovation and assurance for their sustainable growth. At present, some of China's high-tech enterprises, owing to their incompetence in comprehensive innovation, are suffering slow growth and inadequacy in their capacity for sustained expansion. Thus, it is an urgency to make study on comprehensive innovation in high-tech enterprises, which will not only meet the needs of China's high-tech enterprises in their cultivation of core competitive edge, but also be helpful in their innovation activities. The paper, through analysis on current status in innovation in China's high-tech enterprises, combines relevant theories with the ones since the concept of "Innovation" was set forth by Schumpeter, with the attempt of formulating a comprehensive innovation theory that suits China's high-tech enterprises. Both qualitative consideration and quantitative analysis are made in the paper. It expounds on the connotation of comprehensive innovation of high-tech enterprises, formulates the theoretical framework, and discusses the pattern choice for technical innovation, system innovation, management innovation, marketing innovation and knowledge innovation which are under the framework. It also makes an exploration on the evaluation methods on the performance of innovation in high-tech enterprises. And lastly, it makes an analysis on relevant difficulties and problems facing China's high-tech enterprises, and provides corresponding solutions. The paper is divided into 8 chapters. Chapter 1, the introduction, expounds on background, purpose and meaning of the subject and actuality of the research in both inside and outside the country; and also object of study and research method. Chapter 2, lays the theoretical foundation for the exploration of comprehensive innovation in high-tech enterprises by reviewing and reorganizing the system theory, strategy theory, and enterprise network theory. Chapter 3, expounds on the connotation and characteristics of comprehensive innovation of high-tech enterprises, and puts forward the theoretical framework. Chapter 4, discusses the impetus mechanism and behavior of high-tech enterprises' comprehensive innovation, and the pattern choices for innovation in high-tech enterprises in different phases throughout their life span.Chapter 5, focuses on performance evaluation on high-tech enterprises' comprehensive innovation. It puts forward an evaluation system featuring Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP); and makes a case study on 20 high-tech enterprises in Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone. Chapter 6 deals with the security system of high-tech enterprises' comprehensive innovation the discussion on which covers four aspects: venture investment, financial innovation, policy support and social services. Chapter 7, discusses key obstacles facing China's high-tech enterprise in their comprehensive innovation activities and provides some solutions; analysis at both macro and micro levels are made. Chapter 8, makes a conclusion of the paper and gives prospects for the research in this field.
