The labor market is one of the key components of socialist market economy system. Since the practice of reform and open policy started in 1978, the labor market in China has gradually developed. However, this market relatively lagged behind the other essential markets due to such constrains of ideas and systems, laying serious negative influences on an optimized disposal of labor resources, the global functions of market economy and the process of constructing harmonious society. Thus, the key issue to be studied and solved for the reform of economic system in China at present is to enhance the growth and construction of labor market.By applying the research methods of abstraction, combination of logic and history, qualitative and quantitative studies, this thesis studied the development of labor market, including theoretical bases, planning and disposal of labor resources in traditional system, the history, achievements and problems of labor force, and the goals, paths and strategies for labor market. The thesis was composed of 12 chapters. The first chapter was Introduction, including literature review, research background, significance and methodology, structure and innovative findings. The second chapter was about the theoretic basis for the study of labor force growth in China, mainly discussing the general theories, Marxist labor force theories and related theories in the west countries. It was pointed out that the growth of labor market in China shall adhere to and develop Marxist labor force theories, and scientifically treat the Western labor force theories. Chapter three was on the planning and disposal of labor resources, concerning the establishment, developments, features, functions and problems of labor market, providing the necessary historic and logic starting points. Chapter four analyzed the history, achievements and problems of labor market in China, considering that after 30 years the labor market in China has been established, while a series of problems existed including low market levels, unbalanced growth, imperfect mechanisms and rules, and unharmonious relations. Chapter five discussed the process of labor market in China, evaluating the achievements of the market, finding the composite index of the degree to be 56.6%, reaching the market level of later stage of transformation in market economy. Chapter six analyzed the goals and paths of the growth of market economy in China, locating the modes of goals on the one hand, and on the other hand, believing that economic development was the material basis, reforming and opening the drive forces, social stability the fundamental condition, and government the dynamic subject. Chapters seven to eleven were the studies on the strategies in solving the possible problems in the development of labor market in China. The seventh chapter investigated the Countermeasures shall be based on the establishment and improvement of individual property right systems, reform of household register systems, growth of the investment of human capital in rural areas and decrease of discrimination in the labor market. The following four chapters suggested that China needed to speed up the reform on employment systems in state-owned offices to regulate and to protect irregular employment, to accelerate the construction of market networks, service and market systems, to normalize labor relationships, to strengthen the control of supply and demand in the market, and to practice more positive labor market policies. The last chapter was the conclusions and suggestions for further study.The major findings presented in this study include the following: First, this study presented a comparatively thorough summary of Marxist theories on labor market, attempting to provide a tentative exploration on the ways in adhering to and developing these theories.Second, the disposal systems of labor resources were analyzed. Third, the development of labor market in China was divided into four stages: induction, gradual growth, regular formation and full growth.Fourth, the growth of labor market in China was evaluated based on a redesign of indexes in the market.Fifth, a "Five Growth Model" for the labor market in China was suggested.Finally, a relatively thorough exploration of strategies for the labor market in China was conducted, including flow of labor force, reform of employment systems, construction of labor market, reconstruction of labor relation, and control of labor market.
