Located in the northeast of Min (a short name of Fujian), Ningde City is one of nine prefectural-level cities of Fujian. It is a less developed coastal city. Ningde's GDP per capita in 2006 was 58.7% of Fujian Province's GDP per capita, while Ningde's fiscal revenue per capita was only 32.2% of Fujian Province's fiscal revenue per capita. Compared with the developed city such as Xiamen, the economic gap between Ningde and Xiamen is so large that Ningde's GDP per capita was only 25.2% of that of Xiamen and the fiscal revenue per capita was only 8% of it. Ningde City is a less developed region in Fujian Province, which causes the backwardness of social undertakings in Ningde and restricts the speed of health economic development in whole Fujian Province. Through the research, it is universally discovered that less developed regions exist in most of the developed provinces and the economic gap between them is still quite large. Take the data of 2006 for instance, GDP per capita of Shanwei City in Guangdong Province was 14% of that of Guangzhou, and GDP per capita of Suqian City in Jiangsu Province was 10.9% of that of Suzhou, while GDP per capita of Heze in Shandong Province was 14% of that of Qingdao. Researches on sustainable development of economy in these less developed regions has great significance on promoting common prosperity, building a harmonious society and quickening the pace of building a well-off society in an all-round way.The subject takes the less developed regions of developed provinces as the research object and the sustainable economic development of them as the research content. The main research methods applied in this task are dialectical analytical method, the method of unifying from concrete to abstract and from abstract to concrete together, the method of combining qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis, the method of combining theoretical research with empirical analysis, the horizontal and vertical comparative analytical method and so on. The principal component analytical method in mathematical statistics is used to survey integrated values of economic development capacity and support capacity of support system such as resource, environment etc., while the regression analytical method is used to build economic development capacity model and support capacity model. The main results gained in this dissertation are summarized as follows:1. A mathematical model of economic development capacity of Ningde is built by using the principal component analytical method and the regression analytical method;2. Mathematical models of support capacity of support system, including resource, environment, science and technology, population, soft environment for investment, society and so on, which plays an important role in Ningde's economic development are built by using the principal component analytical method and the regression analytical method;3. The correlation analysis between economic development capacity and support capacity shows that the current economic development of Ningde is sustainable as a whole;4. A mathematical model of the selection of regional competitive industry is built, through which we choose smelting and pressing of ferrous metals, electric equipment and machinery, ordinary machinery, farm and sideline product processing as the competitive industries for Ningde currently;5. A mathematical model of the selection of regional pillar industry is built, through which we choose production and supply of electric power and hot power, electric equipment and machinery, transport equipment as the pillar industries for Ningde currently.6. A mathematical model of the selection of regional leading industry is built, through which we choose production and supply of electric power and hot power, electric equipment and machinery, transport equipment as the leading industries for Ningde currently. According to the data in 2006 of Ningde, the top-three chosen leading industries are the same as the top-three chosen pillar industries, though we got the results through different models. It further indicates that Ningde, where the current situation of industry is less developed, is still in the primary stage of industrialization.7. According to the sustainable development theory and the actual conditions of Ningde, it is suggested that we must pursue the strategy of sustainable development, speed up the development of the competitive industry, pillar industry and leading industry, and promote upgrading of the industrial structure;8. On the basis of thoroughly analyzing the characteristics of less developed regions of developed provinces and studying on the practical cases of Ningde's sustainable economic development, it is proposed that we must pursue the strategy of sustainable development, promote the realization of the great-leap-forward development and strive for comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development of the economy, society, resource and environment.The main characteristic of the dissertation is the attempt to use the mathematical models to analyze the economic development phenomena and unveil the laws of economic development. The mathematical models of Ningde's economic development capacity and support capacity of support system such as resource, environment, science and technology, population, soft environment for investment, society etc. are built by using the principal component analytical method and the regression analytical method. Based on the correlation analysis between economic development capacity and support capacity, it is judged that the current economic development of Ningde is sustainable. Methods and models mentioned above could be used as references for research on sustainable economic development of less developed regions of developed provinces.The dissertation builds mathematical models of the selection of regional competitive industry, pillar industry and leading industry.
