In modern economic research, experts pay increasingly attention to the important role played by ideology on institutional change and economic performance. The traditional Chinese Confucian culture, which has the nature of endogenous, together with the culture proposed by government, which has the nature of exogenous, constitute the core content of ideology. In the same time, they become the key elements that affect the institutional change and economic growth gradually. In the background of modern social economic development, belief system and values which are determined by ideology, have an important impact on the emergence and development of market economy. Meanwhile, each active agent will inevitably be restricted and affected by the power of ideology. By affecting active agent's mentality, ideology put an impact on behavioral pattern and on the efficiency of economic growth in a further way.As a kind of social environment, ideology forms an interactive relationship with social members and will affect economic performance under the interaction effect of systems. In the field of new institutional economics, North, as an overall outstanding person who has studied on institution change and Theory of Ideology, defined and analyzed ideology by modern economics way (Transaction Cost Theory) and cognitive science, and identified the close relationship between ideology and institutional change as well as its mechanism towards economic performance. The above make us realize that ideology, which in the core situation of informal institution, will have impact on the choice of formal institution.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, China's rural land system have experienced institutional change from private land ownership to collective land ownership, then to contract system with remuneration linked to output, and at last to diversified land system. In different periods, ideology played a key part in the choice of land system and determined the performance of different institution. The whole change presents North's conclusion that ideology and institution together determine economic performance.From North's Theory of Ideology, this paper will first discuss endogenous ideology that has cultural transmissibility since the funding of New China and exogenous ideology from different periods. Second, this paper will study on the relationship and performance between ideology and the formation of formal institution on China's rural land. And at last, this paper will give conclusion and revelation. In this paper, endogenous ideology that has cultural transmissibility mainly include sense of family and equalization; while exogenous ideology include the Great Leap Forward, "Four Clean-up" Movement, the Great Cultural Revolution and emancipated the mind, seek truth from the facts since opening up and reform. China's rural land system are private land ownership, collective land ownership and contract system with remuneration linked to output, which are formed under the affection of the above ideology.The thesis'structure and main content as follows:The first chapter is preface. Chapter one mainly demonstrates the purpose, main content, basic idea, analysis method, textual structure, innovation and deficiencies. Chapter two elaborates the relationship between ideology, institutional change and performance. Chapter three mainly discusses the endogenous ideology and exogenous ideology that play an important role in the change of China's rural land system. The discussion of endogenous ideology includes sense of family and equalization; while the discussion of exogenous ideology includes the Great Leap Forward, "Four Clean-up" Movement, the Great Cultural Revolution and emancipated the mind, seek truth from the facts. Chapter four to six analyze ideology, rural private land system and performance; ideology, rural collective land policy and performance; ideology, contract system with remuneration linked to output and performance respectively. Chapter seven states rural land system innovation on the basis of contract system with remuneration linked to output. Chapter eight is conclusion and revelation on ideology and change of rural land system. Conclusion: 1.Change of China's rural land system is on the basis of change of ideology, which mainly discuss casual relation between ideology and formal institution. 2. From the relation between ideology, change of rural land system and performance, North's inference has been proved. 3. Ideology and institutions together determine economic performance.Revelation to China's economy: 1.Exogenous ideology should have more inclusiveness in the process of institutional change. 2. Economic function of ideology should be made full use while law of economic development should be given full attention. 3. Contract system with remuneration linked to output is the innovative basis of future rural land system.
