Water-borne UV-curable coatings which combines the advantages of waterborne and UV technologies find increasing industrial applications due to its efficiency, economy and environment. Therefore, the goal of this work is to study water-borne UV-curable coatings, and this work includes the following:1. Study of UV-curable acrylate latex. The process of the preparation including:preparation of functionalized acrylate latex, GMA grafting, mixed with photoinitiator. In addition, the effects of functional monomer, catalyst, temperature and photoinitiator were studied in this work.2. Study of UV-curable epoxy-g-acrylate latex. The process of the preparation including:epoxy resin grafting polymerization, GMA grafting, neutralization, self emulsification, mixed with photoinitiator. In addition, besides the reported grafting sites, some new grafting sites were found and their grafting activity is similar. Moreover, the effects of free radical on grafting polymerization were studied and a new method of increasing the number of grafting sites was suggested. The effects of the other factors on the coatings film were also studied in this work.3. Molecular design of divinyl monomers and applications of the selected one in the preparation of UV-curable latex. Divinyl monomers which have two double bonds different in polymerization activity were designed. According their molecular properties, the most suitable one was selected. Its active double bond is prone to polymerization; therefore, the other one will be left in the polymer. The left double bonds can be cured by UV initiated free radicals. Moreover, the properties of UV cured membranes are excellent.4. Design of water-soluble polymerizable photoinitiator and applications of the selected one in water-borne UV-curable latex. Some photoinitiators were designed and the most suitable one for water-borne UV-curable latex was selected based on the molecular properties, especially water solubility. The selected one was synthesized, and it is easily incorporated into water-borne UV-curable formulations and gives very good performance in UV curing experiments.
