On The Openness Of Contemporary Architecture

The openness of contemporary architecture is mainly discussed in this thesis.The history of architecure is a history of consistent openness. Specifically thearchitectural theory has undergone two crucial evolution of openness since themodern society was established. Likewise, another new evolution of openness isexpected to appear along with the transform in all arenas such aspolitics,economy,culture, etc. Nevertheless, the essence of the openness involvesfurther understanding.Openness in technical system,complexity in space,flexibility infunctionality,which are merely the representation of openness, could never betreated as openness itself. To be more exact, openness means ‘open in mind’,which belongs to values or believes held by architects. As a result the opennessof architecture is a kind of gene existing in the architecture which completelyreflects values of architectsPaper is divided into six chapters, the first chapter for introduction, the secondchapter for opening of "meaning", the third chapter for openness of "tao", the fourthchapter for openness of "law", the fifth chapter for openness of "practice".In the the first chapter, introduction, introduces the research-background, leads tobuilding the openness of the research topic, Briefly summarize open architecturaltheory and its limitations, contemporary architectural theory of openness and sealability, and detailed analysis the relevant theory and works of the experimentalarchitects and social architects,to show different aspects of development of Chinesecontemporary architectural practice on openness.In the second chapter, open "meaning"——the connotation and the social powerof opening. This chapter discusses the connotation of open "chan" and the relationshipbetween complexity of science, informatics, economics, art and other social dynamicelements and openness, and points out the essence and development trend ofopenness.In the third chapter, open "dao"——discussion of architectural openness. Askernel chapters of paper, this chapter expounds the construction of openness to followfour attitude (tao): the “tao” of experience, guide, week/lightness and thoughts,draw a overall,rich,multimeaning outline of the contemporary open building, further uncoverskernel spirit of the "opening".In the fourth chapter, the "law" of open-how to realize open building. Thischapter discussed the approaches to realize the open building from three aspects ofinternal force elements of society restricts, external force elements of society restrictsand duties of architects.In the fifth chapter,"practice" of open——the opening practice of Chinesecontemporary architecture. This chapter summarizes the the different roles of value ofpractical architects, experimental architects, social architects in Chinese buildingrevolutionary practice tide which lasting30years,and analyses specificly the relatedtheory and works of experimental architects, social architects,which shows thedifferent profile of the developing of Chinese contemporary opening practice onarchitecture.The overall structure of papers is "meaning-way-law-practice", Expandingdiscussion by the recognizing clue of “connotation of openness-the characteristics ofarchitectural openness-realization of architectural openness-the practic ofarchitectural openness”.Paper covered a wider field and holding the hope for bringingcomprehensive understanding and divergent thinking on the problem of architecturalopenness.
