Virtual Reality (VR) has been convinced to be appropriate for urban road trafficflow’s simulating, which is the main part of urban traffic. The simulation of urban roadtraffic flow can give an important consultation to virtual traffic safety education forpedestrians and research of urban road traffic flow. This paper deeply researched on thetheories, methods and technologies of urban road traffic flow’s virtual simulating fromthe microscopic view to the macroscopic view, and developed an intelligentializedvirtual urban road traffic flow simulation system.Firstly the base of virtual traffic flow’s simulating-3D modeling in virtualenvironments was researched, and the transformation of3D models between differentformats was achieved on the platform of OpenGL so that they can be rendered in realtime. The level of details (LOD) technique and the particle system technique were alsoused to help establishing urban roads’ and buildings’ models under different climates.Then in order to set virtual cars in motion, the animation control in VR was studied,and the virtual map network was structured with a linked list network based on thenodes of traffic lanes in roads. It became the data foundation of virtual cars’ motion.After that drivers’ normal mode of selecting routes was analyzed and the virtual vehiclerouting algorithm based on the judgment of mutual positions was proposed. Virtualcars’ routes’ calculating and guiding were also fulfilled with the algorithm.Vehicles’ behavior characteristics under various traffic situations were investigatedand different motion strategies were endued with virtual cars to intelligentize theiractions so that they can manage varied circumstances. Then intellectualized cars werecongregated as a primary virtual traffic flow and random disturbances were added in.For the purpose of virtual traffic flow’s further intelligentization, intelligent controlmethods were researched and the ant colony algorithm was chosen to optimize thesimulation of virtual traffic flow. The ant colony algorithm was modified according tothe features of the virtual traffic flow simulation before it applied in intelligentoptimization of the virtual traffic flow.At last a virtual urban road traffic flow simulation system was developed by theauthor to adapt to the actual needs of pedestrian traffic safety education in VR andurban road traffic flow study. Methods and technologies of the research were applied and verified by the practical traffic data of Wudaokou district in Beijing, and they wereproved to be feasible.
