With the extending size of container terminals, loading-unloading system of the ports are becoming large -scale, high speed, automatic and informational, in order to upgrade further the efficiency of production and the level of services. The construction of port container terminal needs many investments, and the lifecycle is long, moreover, its planning and designing relates to many aspects, such as technology, economy, social environment, etc. At the same time, shipping operation of the quay is discrete, stochastic and dynamic. Thus it is difficult to make a decision scientifically on the layout of the terminal and the equipment station.In recent years, virtual reality technology has already become the focus of the researching and developing in computer science and other technological science fields. Its application is more and more extensive. This dissertation is a part of the research named "the simulation and optimization study of container terminal's loading-unloading craft based on virtual reality", and the background of the research is the fifth project of shanghai port. It introduces the VR technology and the Simulation technology to the planning and designing of the quay after analyzing the whole logistics process of the container terminal. We develop software named CTSS (Container Terminal Simulation System) to make designer and policymaker know the quay's structure and the performance and efficiency from the operation of the quay. Through the software we can avoid the faults in the design, improve designing quality and shorten the design period.After reviewing the domestic and international's research and using of virtual reality technology in the quay, this dissertation illustrate its realistic meaning in the planning and designing of the quay. Combining virtual reality technology, mechanical designing technique with the planning method of the quay, the writer proposes the thinking of the development of the CTSS software and analyse the key technology. For example, the collision measuring, the human-computer interaction control, the real-time output of the statistical results of simulation etc.Through analysing to the system of container terminal, we know it includessurface of container terminal, bridge approach, yard etc. and Quay Crane, Gantry, Tractor, Shipping, etc. We have set up the scene model of the whole system on the basis of model storehouse. Analyzing the production course of the mechanical equipment of the container terminal, we set up kinematics model. Based on Vega and VC6.0 to realize the real-time parameter's inputting, the results outputting and controlling.The user can roam the VR system through direction key of the keyboard, menu, shortcut keys, etc. The CTSS can strengthen the comprehension of the user in order to enlighten his thought about the planning and designing of the quay.
