Virtual reality (VR) technique can be applied to research and development of products throughout all the phases, and will be widely used in engineering area. In this paper VR techniques are introduced into design of gun system, and exploratory work is focused on modeling techniques of artillery VR, in which the main tasks are as follows:Firstly, the fundamental theory on modeling techniques of VR is introduced. The differences between VR model and conventional computer-aided design (CAD) model are pointed out. The method of converting CAD model to VR model is presented, and irregular triangle net (TIN) algorithm and multi-resolution technique are employed to improve the quality of modeling.Secondly, three dimensional solid model of a self-propelled gun is constructed by means of I-DEAS, and is converted to VR model in terms of some principles of rapid prototyping. In the environment of MultiGen Cretor, the VR model of a self-propelled gun is simplified and reduced for the real-time applications, and degrees of freedom of gun's motion are defined, including moving, aiming and firing.Finally, dynamics simulator for gun launch is initially developed. The VR model of a self-propelled gun is driven in the software environment for virtual reality and real-time simulation applications. Virtual environments are created and the navigation functionality is primarily realized.
