China is undergoing the process of rapid urbanization, the orders of regional spacein human settlements is especially prominent, yet at the same time collapse of regionalspatial orders has become a serious concern. The establishment of regional spatial orderis becoming an important and urgent mission of the times. In recent years, westernidealologies on the concept of region gruadually flourished, however many of theirtheoritial researches have limitations On the other hand, the fine traditions of ancientChinese human settlement practices uphold spatial order consistently, accumulating richexperiences while their theoretical knowledge of regional planning are still insufficiency. The purpose of this research is to obtain revelation for the reconstruction ofcontemporary regional spatial order through ancient Chinese regional design of humansettlements–namely the tranditional Chinese practices and methods on regional design.Based on the idea of “practical-oriented method” and issues in history as a guidingprinciples, this research demonstrates regional design experiences of ancient China canbe used as a reference, providing a tentative model for contemporary practices ofregional design. In the study of ancient Chinese regional design, case study method isadopted based on realism and complexity of the research objects. Firstly, a series ofrepresentative and enlightening cases are selected from the Changan region during theQin/Han Dynasties to the Sui/Tang Dynasties; Secondly, the research time span andspace range are defined within a sub-capital area around30km from the Changan city;Thirdly, this research analyses the regional design thougths and methods of the Qin/Hanand Sui/Tang dynasties, respectively laying out the macro framework as well as theoverall developing structure of the Changan region; Finally, dynamic forces andcharacteristics of ancient Chinese regional design are obervered and concluded.Analysis on typical case studys, including adoptation of methods in seeking simplifiedsolutions for complex problems in human settlement science, reveals the most essentialprinciples in sovling practial regional design problems in each historical peirodmentioned mentioned above. This thesis will focus on a regional scale of human settlement design, revealing theregional design achievements of the Changan area in Qin, Han, Sui and Tang Dynasties. From a hierarchial perspective of the human settlement theory, new knowledges areaquired on spatial forms of Xianyang, the capital of Qin Dynasty and Changan, thecapital of Han Dynasty.
