Port is the central node of land and water communication with great spatial significance. As the most important component to port city, no matter for the space or for the function, it keeps extremely close relationship with the city located in. The practice proves that the upgrading and updating of port produces effects on the urban spatial evolution directly. This paper chooses the spatial relationship between port and its city as study subject. On the basis of the analysis on the effects of urban spatial structure changes brought by port upgrading and updating, it set the spatial evolution in port city under the circumstances of port function progress and port industrial agglomeration as study object. With the case study of Dalian city, it applies remote sensing technique and geography information system integrated technology, combined with mathematical models, spatial statistics and spatial scenario simulation analysis methods as research means. By the theoretical support of urban spatial structure evolution studies, it utilizes Landsat TM remote sensing images of Dalian from 1990 to 2013 with a more than two-decade time span as research data, and explores the change process of the urban spatial structure, the shape and the gravity centers during the port upgrading and updating from different spatial and temporal scale, so as to discuss the affects of port industrial agglomeration on port city spatial changes. It also integrates the spatial sampling method and Logistic spatial regression model to carry out the regression analysis on the quantitative relationship between construction land use changes and a series of natural, social and port related factors in Dalian new urban, which is highly gathered with port industries. Besides, based on the mechanism of port upgrading and updating to urban spatial change, the paper proposes a simulation model on port city spatial evolution by using the integration on Cellular Automata theory and Markov prediction model. In this model, various interest requirements are comprehensively taken into consideration. As a result, three different spatial scenario simulation assumptions are designed respectively based on natural development, target orientation and ecology protection. In this way, dissimilar development scenarios under the influences of port upgrading and updating progress and port industrial agglomeration could be obtained. On that basis, several spatial landscape indexes are chosen to evaluate and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the simulated future spatial structure change in the three scenarios. At final, the paper puts forward the suggestion on how to achieve the harmony between port industry development and ecological land protection in port city. It is considered that port city should obey the law of urban spatial structure effects by port upgrading and updating and give priority to ecological land protection as principle so as to control the expansion speed of construction land, lead the centralized layout of port industry, improve land use productivity and optimize port city urban strucuture. The conclusion could improve the understanding upon the spatial change process and mechanism within the port city and provide visual and predictable decision-making references for port city spatial planning, so as to instruct the spatial arrangement in transportation, social and economic fields, to comply with trend of port upgrading and updating and enhance the rationality and order of spatial development in port city.
