Military Settlement System along the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty, the interactive product of special human activities and geographical space in the frontier area, is widely distributed in the northern frontier of human geography landscape. Being a complex, dynamic, organic systematic overall constituted by the body of the Great Wall, military settlement system and various ancillary facilities, Military Settlement along the Great Wall belongs to the settlement system category, which is a special settlement system with dual functions of military defense and civil production. The paper chose the three towns of Xuanfu, Datong and Shanxi as the research object, with complicated nonlinear science including fractal theory and system theory as the main perspective, basing on the Great Wall history, modern researches, survey as well as test data, using the integrated research methods covering GIS spatial geographic information analysis, mathematics, statistics and others, which reveals the macro systematic relationship of the military settlement along the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty with multidimensional, multilevel and quantification. The research is divided into three levels: First and foremost, exploring the dynamic evolution process and its influencing factors of the military settlement of the three towns of Xuanfu, Datong and Shanxi in the full context of time and space, systematically analyzing the three towns’ settlement system and its attributive elements’ spatial distribution and influencing factors; Secondly, based on the previous researches, fractal theory and system theory, we deeply analyzed the macro core subsystem’s the complexity of systematic relationship and its spatial structure form of the three towns’ settlement system, which involves traffic network system, information transmission system, settlement system hierarchical structure systems, as well as settlement garrison hierarchical structure; Finally, synthesizing research results of the subsystem and exploratively building the descriptive theory model of military settlement along the Great Wall, hereby completing the preliminary exploration of integral systematic relationship of military settlement along the Great Wall. The study found that military settlement along the Great Wall of the three towns is the settlement system and the Great Wall coupling complex fractal structure generated by the double power including the evolution model of the traditional settlement system and linear the Great Wall. The hierarchical structure system, levels and structure of the troops, transport network system and the spatial organization structure related to the military defense settlement system have clear and stable fractal structure, and the dimension values of the three towns are close in many ways, which shows that the three settlement systems follow a consistent generic principal and operating mechanism on a macro level. According to the findings, the official formation and standards of the military defense settlement system are strictly defined. The coupled and systematic relationship and driving mechanisms for the growth between the settlement systems and linear Great Wall of Ming are described qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on this model, the essay is trying to do a tentative exploration in theories on the fundament characteristic of the military defense settlement system, Ming Great Wall’s systematic values, and cooperative defense mechanisms between settlement system and the great wall from a systematic and integral view. The fractal structure became a classical and optimize ode when human settlement system satisfied demands of the complex man-earth relationship. At the same time, Ming Great Wall’s military defense settlement system has effectively solved the contradictions of optimal military resource allocation at a long defense line. Therefore, it implements the effective translation between even military distribution and rapid force concentrations, realizes the multi-level integration of the limited military resources with the wide resident settlement, and finally builds a systematic defense system though all-weather work against the occasional attacks.
