Since ancient times, good health and a long life have always been humans’most beautiful wishes. The academic ideologies and long practices and exploration of Chinese medicine and health maintenance scientists over the generations have proven the health maintenance standards Doctor Yang-Ling Tung, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, has spent his lifetime setting. Doctor Tung was a scholarly, conscientious, careful, humble, and gentle person of virtue with the artistic conception of a Confucianist and lofty sentiments of chivalry. He had received both eastern and western education and can integrate ancient and modern knowledge to keep pace with the times. He has the backbone of a winter plum tree and the sentiment of a green pine and is an outstanding medical writer, educator, and clinical practitioner of the time. He specializes in special diseases. He is also a practitioner of health maintenance. Although he has a foothold on Taiwan, he can take a broad view with the tolerance of "putting himself in other people’s position", sparing no efforts to promote the national essence, Chinese medicine and health maintenance.PurposeThe clear purpose is health maintenance, which is a voluntary behavior to maintain life. The science of health maintenance of traditional Chinese medicine is a science to, based on the theories of Chinese medicine, understand the laws of human lives and explore the aging mechanism and various methods to keep mind and body healthy, improve physique, prevent diseases, and extend life. It is also a mechanism of early prevention, skillful resistance, and good maintenance. This science studies the balance among body, mind, and spirit, investigates methods to improve physique to increase immunity, prevent diseases, and extend life, and integrates the modern thought of health maintenance and healthcare. This study is based on the above ideas of treatment in advance before diseases develop, guiding the exploration of maintenance from before pregnancy throughout one’s life through four-season healthy diet and dietary therapy. It is a new milestone for modern art of life.MethodThis study took the classic western and eastern viewpoints of health maintenance to further illustrate the concepts of health maintenance in ancient and modern times and apply them in diversified methods (from the Qin Dynasty to the present day). Then, this study analyzed the science knowledge of the human-based process of life in the Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor for treatment before diseases develop and the nourishment of the three energies of Chinese medicine based on the principles of natural regime. Lastly, this study investigated Tung’s view on health maintenance as the best example based on the inherited knowledge of regime from thousands of years since ancient time to the present day.ResultTung proposed the "movement of health maintenance, all living things, and eugenics". For health maintenance, correct concepts are important. Forming a habit will lead to significant effects. For all living things, the key is to have an open mind and to let go through wisdom, for "tolerance leads to a long life". As for eugenics, it is the implementation of Tung’s philanthropism. Improving parents’ physiques leads to healthy children. The foundation of early prevention, skillful resistance, and good maintenance must be built for health maintenance.ConclusionThis study explained in simple language the profound theories of Tung’s original (1) Yang-Ling Chinese medicine eugenic healthcare method,(2) dietary therapy,(3) CPR in Chinese medicine, and (4) extra acupuncture&moxibustion therapy in medical cases, upholding the idea that neutralization leads to the order of heaven and earth and the birth of all living things. Chinese people value "humanism". There is also "humanism" in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine and health maintenance help to get to the root to take care of our body. The highest principle of health maintenance is the Doctrine of Mean. This study helped people to understand that "dynamic activities help to improve physique while static activities help to maintain health", in other words, being healthy is being balanced among body, mind, and spirit, and that "treating diseases relies on doctors while healthcare relies on oneself".
