He Meng-yao, a native of Nanhai County, Guangdong Province in qing dynasty, who has distinct characteristics in Chinese medical history. Study the life and academic thought of He Meng-yao has a great significance, not only for the Lingnan medicine (South of the Five Ridges medicine), but also has important reference value for the academic inheritance and development of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine). In this paper, we through the study of literature, field investigation, consulting experts,and the methods of clinical awareness, to research his life and academic thought. The research content can be divided into the following four parts.1. The study of He Meng-yao’s lifeIn this paper, through the research of the historical background of Lingnan area during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, we concluded that the development of social politics, economy and culture, and medical schools of thought contend, contribute to the formation of He Meng-yao’s academic thought.We also concluded that He Meng-yao has two another name Zang-diao and Bao-zhi, and also known Xi-chi and Yan-nong, and he was born in 1693, died in 1764. His mentor, Hui Shi-Ji, has important influence on him.This dissertation also makes textual research into the main contents and the year of publication of He Meng-yao’s written or compiled works. His medical works mainly include Yi Bian, Shang Hang Lun Jing Yan, San Ke Ji Yao, Le Zhi Tang Ren Zi Xu Zhi, Yi Fang Quang Shu, Zhen Jiu Chui Yun Ji, Gan Shan Yi An,etc. His non-medical works mainly include Ju Fang Yuan Shi Chao, Zhuang Zi Gu, Huang Ji Jing Shi Yi Zhi, Suan Di, Geng He Lu, Cenxi Xian Zhi, Zhaoqing Fu Zhi, Meihua Si Ti Shi, Ju Fang Yuan Wen Chao,and so on.II. Academic origin researchTo study a doctor’s academic thought, the first thing to know his academic origin. Aiming at the lack of the current study, in this paper, we focuse on the academic origin of He Meng-yao.Combined with the medical theory and prescriptions, we compared the He Meng-yao’s medical books and a lot of related books. We found that He Meng-yao’s academic thought in Yi Bian mainly comes from Zheng Zhi Zhun Sheng, Song Ya Zun Sheng, and Yi Zong Jin Jian, and his academic thought in San Ke Ji Yao mainly comes from Yi Zong Jin Jian. What’s more, his work Sheng Xiao Jiao Qi Mi Fang(special beriberi secret recipe) comes from the Song dynasty famous party medical works Sheng Ji Zong Lu.III. Main academic thought researchIn this paper, the research on He Meng-yao’s academic thought is mainly divided into six aspects.1、We focused on his academic stance of argued against the misuse of Warming and invigorating drugs, and demonstrate that he recognized part of Zhang Jingyue’s academic view, such as theory of triple energizer, Clinical experience for the treatment of blood syndrome,etc.2、We discussed his spirit of inquiry and criticism, he questioned about the theory of Wuyun Liuqi(five movements and six essentials). And discusses his contribution in the theory of viscera physiological pathology.3、We study his contribution on the science of seasonal febrile diseases. We not only discussed his characteristics on the comments of Shang Hang Lun, but also found that he distinguish cold disease between warm disease and the plague disease, and opposed to the theory of hidden exogenous seasonal disease. And we also concluded that his academic thought about the plague disease mainly come from Song Ya Zun Sheng.4、We summarized the characteristics of his academic thought and treatment in Lingnan frequently-occurring disease such as phlegm wet disease, malaria, beriberi and consumptive disease.5、We discussed his contribution on medical education and diagnostics of traditional Chinese medicine.6、We also induction and summary He Meng-yao’s medical knowledge in his non-medical works, such as Ju Fang Yuan Shi Chao, Zhuang Zi GU,and Huang Ji Jing Shi Ti Zhi.Ⅳ. Academic impact researchIn this paper, We studied the He Meng-yao’s academic inheritance and academic influence.We found that His academic thought not only affects many Chinese doctors since the middle period of qing dynasty such as Lu Yi-tian and Wang Meng-ying, but also affects many Japanese physicians such as Tanpa medical family.We have realized that, He Meng-yao’s academic thought also has a positive impact and great significance to the development of modern South of the Five Ridges medicine.To sum up, in this paper, the research on He Meng-yao is not blindly praise, but strive to stand in the angle of the objective,to research his life and academic thought.We pay special attention to study his academic origin, and put forward some personal views. Hopefully the outlook of this paper will be of benefit to the present and future research about He Meng-yao, Lingnan medicine and TCM academic history.
