Objective Study on Zhang Zhong-jing’s based theory of phlegm,while concluse his characters and disscuss the pround influence or achievement to the pre-Tang medicine.Methods The first section is to discuss the concept of phlegm before Tang-dynastDiscussion of pre-Tang’s contribution to treating phlegm based on Zhang Zhong-jing’s phlegm theory.The third section is the research the theoretical foundation of phlegm theory to conclude Zhang Zhong-jing’s phlegm theory,and discussion about the profound influence and the contribution that differential treatment of phlegm in the period of pre-Tang.The other five sections follow like that Firstly,systematically collecting and researching the clause in Inner canon of Huangdi,to uncover the theoretical foundation of Zhang Zhong-j ing phlegm theory. Secondly,classification and summarized the clause of Treatise on febrile disease and synopsis of golden chamber,to clarify the development promoted by Zhang Zhong-j ing that the differential treatment of phlegm includes syndrome,disease,etiology, pathogenesis and therapeutic rule.Thirdly,analysis the characteristic of the differential treatment on phlegm in the period of Wei and Jin Dynasties by the rule of Zhang Zhong-jing’s phlegm theory.Fourthly,comparative research on disease,syndrome,etiology and pathogenesis between Zhang Zhong-jing’s phlegm theory and General Treatise on Causes and Manifestations of All Diseases is needed.Fifthly,analysis the development and contribution to the differential treatment of phlegm in Essential Prescriptions Worth a thousand gold and Waitaimiyao formula by the rule of phlegm theory.Results The Inner Canon of Huangdi has discuss about the name and the syndrome manifestations,also etiology and pathogenesis,or the treatment of phlegm,which are the foundation to the theory of Zhang Zhong-jing,Han dynasty.The core of Zhang’s theory is to discuss about the phlegm,it includes many diseases and syndrome,especially how to prescriptions to cure phlegm.Doctors in Wei Jin Northern and Southern Dynasties used herbs tased pungent-warm to treat phlegm,which accord to balance it by warm drugs advocated by Zhang Zhong-jing.General Treatise on the Causes and Syndormes of Diseases mainly discusses about etiology and pathogenesis,while the prescriptions written in Thousand Golden Prescriptions and the Medical Secrets of An Official are a supplement to Zhang Zhong-jing’s phlegm theory.Conclusion The phlegm theory promoted by Zhang Zhong-jing is based on the theoretical foundation described in Inner Canon of Huangdi,while the theory contains differential treatment and theory,principle,formulas,medildinal herbs,so that,the phlegm theory makes great contribution in Chinese medical history. The phlegm theory comes from substantial practice in Han dynasty and it can guide the treatment to phlegm,which shows the strong vitality in the traditional Chinese medicine.
