Theoretical Development Of Gestational Diseases Chapter Of Synopsis Of Golden Chamber And Its Modern Application

Objective This paper analyzed the historical developments of the prescriptions in the chapter of gestational diseases of Synopsis of Golden Chamber and discussed about its modern application value for the high-leveled diagnosis and treatment of the common obstinate gestational diseases.Methods This paper analyzed the original text of the chapter of gestational diseases of Synopsis of Golden Chamber by Zhang Zhongjing in combination with the clinical practice. It further illustrated the theoretical developments of the chapter in Invaluable Prescriptions for Ready Reference of Sun Simiao in Tang Dynasty and Complete Collection of Prescriptions for Women of Chen Ziming in Song Dynasty. We also developed the prescriptions of Zhang Zhongjing and applied them to the diagnosis and treatment of gestational diseases based on clinical practices.Results Most of the ten prescriptions listed in the chapter of gestational diseases contained drugs which are believed to should be baned or used with caution in pregnancy. Based on the chapter, medical practitioners in Tang and Song Dynasties inherited the prescriptions of Zhang Zhongjing and created many new prescriptions for treating gestational diseases, thus promoting the development and progress of obstetrics and gynecology of traditional Chinese medicine. Nowdays, there are still many disputes about the prescriptions of the chapter in medical environment. Most medical practitioners take the original prescriptions recorded in the book as reference or make improvement of them rather than applying them unchanged in the treatment of gestational diseases. After years of inheritance and innovation, however, we have explored and found the application values of the medicines recorded in the chapter such as Chinese angelica, ligusticum wallichii and radix paeoniae rubra based on the research progress about gestational physiology and pathology in western medicine.Conclusion 1. Although Synopsis of Golden Chamber was written about 1,800 years ago, the prescriptions recorded in the chapter of gestational diseases still have guiding significance and reference value in modern clinical application.2. As the pioneer in the treatment of gestational diseases, the chapter can not be applied to cure all gestational diseases and the medical practitioners of later ages has made effective improvements of the prescriptions.3. With the progress in the modern diagnosis and treatment of gestational diseases, the science and rationality of the prescriptions recorded in the chapter has been proved. So, further clinical and scientific research about them should be carried out to get a better clinical application.
