The Study Of Yu Yue’s Literature

Yu Yue, as a famous scholar, scribes and scribes educator in late Qing, was of great importance and influence in academia. His writings involved various contents with diverse genres, which was an outstanding accomplishment in late Qing. Those writings were very influential and were meaningful paradigm. This article interactively investigates Yu Yue’s family, his life, his ideology, his academy and works through cubic lens. Furthermore, this article attaches importance on comparative contrast between Yu Yue and other scholars and analyze from perspective of academic history. Details are as follows:Chapter I: Yu Family and his wife’s family were scholarly families. Yu Yue influenced deeply by his predecessors and took utmost care of descendants. He passed down his scholar influence to his descendants which made Yu family very prosperous. The poem“Spring Still after Flowers Fall”is the mirror image of Yu’s lifelong notion and the exteriorization of his ideology. This poem indicates his independent thought, positive attitude and generous but plain personality. In 1857, Yu Yue was dismissed as procurator in Henan. This article searched for rare materials presenting the truth of Yu Yue by revising the previous errors. That Yu Yue was dismissed had exercised great influence on Yu Yue’s ideology and his literature, which drove Yu Yue to undertake writings. Yu Yue continued anti-science ideology and developed it well, which brought typical significance in that society.Chapter II: This chapter states the acquaintance between Yu Yue and several representatives such as Zeng Guofan, He Shaoji etc. It analyzed the agreement and disagreement of their thoughts and notions. In that case, it is clear to see Yu Yue’s high reputation in literature and academia in late Qing and his charisma, which determined typical and contemporary significance.Chapter III: Yu Yue tries to purify the hearts of human beings and maintain society’s order with“Li”. Yu Yue inherited and developed the spirit of“The neo-confucianism”of the Qing dynasty, and he showed the understanding and respect to human nature through his explanation on“Li”. Yu Yue believed that literature should express the true nature and he appreciated that kind of works. He also thought there should be various ways to express the“true nature”. Yu Yue thought highly of indoctrination, and he advocated indoctrinating by using popular literature. Yu Yue also put emphasis on the entertaining functions of popular literature and he carried out this idea in his works. On the basis of the cognition to humanity and agreement on preference of people, Yu Yue not only persisted on his view of enlightenment but he also emphasized on the art of literature. Scribes influenced Yu Yue’s notion on literature and his works. But he raised some notion of progressive meaning and spirits for contemporary society by self-description on Confucius classic. These two elements were contradicted because they are the integration of conservation and progression. They came from convention but changeable, which signified the traits of the transition period of modern literature.Chapter IV: Yu Yue consciously pursued the mystery and supernatural sense of his novels. Meanwhile, he cares the reflection of current society by his novels. His view of novel and other writings had strong sense of historians. The main purpose on Yu’s novels was to describe people and their event then appraised justice and contempt viciousness. Yu Yue took“Chun-Qiu Writing Skill”as his norm, emphasizing on stating in an objective and calm tone. This kind of skill was different from Pu Songling and Ji Yun’s. Yu Yue wrote novel based on his scholar identity normally analyzing through stories in a calm attitude, which presented his knowledge of objectivity. Influenced by thinking mode of matter-of-fact, Yu Yue cared more on the truth of the story when he searched for materials that were selected from social reality. His novels concretely denoted the individual, literature and the requirement of times, which had the sense of precursor. Chapter V: Yu Yue’s drama was a classic of the transformation between drama theory and drama creation. From miscellaneous drama to two legends, Yu Yue’s cognition to drama with novel pattern had an obvious development of change and development, which embodied his agreement and emphasis on drama. Yu Yue expanded the region of education on drama, which was consistent with the legend literature function by modern literati. This serves as a guide for the literature notion of reformers. Yu Yue accomplished his goals by integrating fiction and reality in writing skill. His drama told the conflict on both inside and outside. From subjectivity to objectivity, as well as emotion to ration, Yu Yue’s cognition to drama reflected scribes’cognition. Meanwhile, His cognition was also thinking between genre and social responsibility at stage of civilization transformation. The notion of literature reform became more and more clear.Chapter VI: Yu Yue’s view of poem has clearly dialectical. He believed literature was constrained by background of times and individual experience. Thus, he stressed on the difference of individual aesthetic. Yu Yue claimed the diversity of poem style but protested mechanical mimicry. Yu Yue emphasized on the beauty of both content and style. He especially stressed on the beauty of poem. Yu Yue selectively continued and developed Yuan Mei’s spirituality。From the perspective of diction, Yu Yue cared the relation between diction and rhyme as well as the euphemistic expression, in which wording worked through inborn characteristics. Yu Yue engaged in his writing from the genre such as express when being sorrow, analyzed specifically on the content of poems. Yu Yue exercised hard on his poem writing skill and ended with proficiency of his writing on poem. He was good at plain description and portrayal dynamic beauty. Yu Yue’s view on poem reflected the characteristic of transformation of appreciative research on traditional literature towards rational analysis. It was a great progressive significance on his pursuit of artistic beauty.Chapter VII: Yu Yue broke the border between rhyming wording and prose, advocating freedom on forms and implicit expressions. This direct literature view was meaningful to disclose reality and it was the reflection of fashion of times. Yu Yue claimed that article should be based on author’s self-expression but also not violate the writing rule from traditional writings, so as to enlarge the functions of articles. Yu Yue not only had treatise but he also had statement articles full of knowledge and philosophy.Looking back synthetically, Yu Yue’s literature and his notion on writing presented convention and progression, property of continuum, creation, contradiction and integration, which was the epitome of modern literature transformation. Analysis of Yu’s works facilitates controlling on the pace of transformation from ancient literature to modern literature.
