In this thesis, the text of Narrating War in "Zuo Zhuan" has been researchedsystematically. This thesis suggests that text underlying structure is the intermediate layer linkedto the real events and the discourse surface. The Discourse we get does not point to thereal events in the world, but is associated with the original event description. Whatreaders get is narrated events, not the original events. Therefore, this paper carried outthe research on the "Zuo Zhuan" narration and discourse structure, and further analysisof the underlying structure of the elements in the forms of language expression level. This thesis consists of8chapters.Chapter one is introduction. We explain the reason of selecting this topic, thinkingof research, research purpose and its significance. The source and research methods arealso introduced.Chapter Two presents today’s condition of correlative study. We reveal the currentcondition of domestic and international text linguistics. Achievements in recent yearsof "Zuo Zhuan" in its rhetoric, narrative, vocabulary and grammar has also been listedand analyzed. The third chapter is about "Zuo Zhuan" war narrating’s discourse definition andclassification. Firstly,"Zuo Zhuan" war narrating discourse is defined as an languageunit bigger than or equal to a sentence that can give a war case a complete description. The significance of the theme is relatively integrate coming down in one continuousline, orderly structured, with relatively independent function, and is able to completean identifiable communicative function depending on context. The length of thislanguage unit ranges from one single paragraph to more than a dozen. And thenthrough the combination of form and meaning standard, determines the "Zuo Zhuan"520discourses of war narrating. According to the textual objective narration and fictional chronicle features, the text is further divided into three types. At the sametime, from the "Pre-Qin dynasty" characteristics of thinking and it’s historical functionwe analysis two aspects of "Zuo Zhuan" in the cultural context. The fourth chapter analyzes the discourse structure of "Zuo Zhuan"’s warnarrating. By comparing with other document, we found out the same war events maywritten differently. This is because of the different communicative purposes willproduce different discourse structure pattern. Discourse structure refers to therelationship between discourse structure and elements. The underlying structure ofnarration and discourse consists of two events and comments. Includes the core events, subsequent events and other types of events. Core events include the background, reasons, results and lower elements. In all the war narrating discourse annotation, wesummed up the168pure event,175simple event,177complex events underlyingstructure. Then we concluded the war narrating discourse structure schemas as:"plot","background story plus plot""plot plus comments" and "background story plus plotand comments".And significant relationships between elements are discussed. The fifth chapter is about means of expression of elements of "event". Theunderlying structure decides how to narrate the war events while at the same time it’slimited by the linear features of the narration Linear feature of discourse is the surfacefeature of text. Whether it is the author’s narrative purpose or underlying structure, itmust be in linear pattern so that it can be embodied in the entity. This chapter analyzesthe various elements of "event": background, reasons, means of expression of results, and the four kinds of elements can be divided into "indicative""dialogue". Discoursestructure usually reflects the steps and procedure of the events, while in order tohighlight the communicative purpose, better reflect the narrative intention, authors canalso redesigned the order. In the section we are talking about, orders of elements indiscourse pattern are mainly narration, flashback and narration interposed, in additionto. And also, we have discussion on the "cohesion" events in "Zuo Zhuan" in thischapter. The sixth chapter is about the form of expression of "comments" in war narration of "Zuo Zhuan". Textual comments mainly in two ways。One is by the talking ofpeople in the story. The other has its distinctive mark of introducing a third person’scomment such as "A gentleman says". This chapter focuses on the second,37comments started by "A gentleman says" have been collected and we analyze theirwords and sentences. We highlight the analysis of their frequent vocabulary anddiscourse function; and the frequency of the four types of sentences of and their speechfunction. At the same time, we investigate that comments are persuasions in essenceand the rhetorical tactics of the persuasions. The seventh chapter is about the formation mechanism of the war narratingdiscourse. This chapter mainly discusses the formation mechanism of the war narratingdiscourse from the perspective of cognitive psychology. Three factors have beenanalized: subject, the formation mechanism of the environment, and the discourse form. The meaning of speech is the cognitive construction from the communicative intention. In the process of this construction, both sides of talking (output) and listening (input)experience the same two cognitive processes, which are formation of cognitivehypothesis and the selection of decision. We get the meaning of speech from theprocess of cognition of the subject. The eighth chapter is the conclusion. It’s the summary of the main conclusions ofthis paper, issues we didn’t cover, and defects that may exist in the research.
