Compared with the overall prosperity of poetry study of Tang dynasty, the study of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations appears relatively weak and few people among the academic circles carry out research at this aspect. The subject we chose, namely, the research on the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations, takes the noumenon of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations as the research object and the allusion as the entry point of the research. The research purpose is to make a tentative probe into the noumenon of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations through the research on the allusion which is the main feature of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations.The research this paper carries out is a kind of research on topicality linguistic data. This paper consists of four parts, which are divided into eight chapters. In these eight chapters, the author will open up his exposition of the research gradually. Now the author gives a brief introduction to the main content of every part.The first part, namely, chapter one, is the part of introduction. This chapter will introduce the object and the background of the research and explain some relevant concepts. This part will also present the methods and the train of thought of the research, and so on, and thus make preparations for the following formal research on the allusion of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations.The second part, namely, chapter two, is the research on the allusion of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations. This part is involved in the content of the two aspects concretely. The first aspect is the research on the noumenon level of the allusion chosen as the topics of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations. This research mainly probes into the place of the allusion chosen in the topics of the poems in the literature of the allusion source. It also makes an exploration about the distribution of the literature of the allusion source and the constitution of the form of allusion. The second part makes a detailed statement of the thought of respecting Confucian, advocating morality and emphasizing history formed in Tang Dynasty and its auspicious sign and zunch culture embodied in the topics of allusion. In this part, the author also discusses the inheritance of aesthetic orientation in the literature of six dynasties in detail, namely, the thought of "gorgeous but not impetuous, elegant but not barbaric ", which was advocated by Anthology.The third part is the main body of the paper, which ranges from chapter three to chapter seven. This part emphatically discusses the situation of allusion used in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations. The first four chapters in this part is the research on the noumenon level of allusion of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations. These four chapters mainly discuss the literature and the category of meaning of the allusion source, the way of constitution of the form of allusion, the syllable formation of the form of allusion and the features of grammatical structure of the form of allusion, and so on. Chapter seven is the focal point of this part. It is also the focal point of the paper, which mainly discusses the using of allusion in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations at the pragmatic level, namely, making a probe into the way of choosing and using allusion and the rhetorical effect of using allusion in the poems.As for the way of choosing allusion in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations, it can be summed up in five categories through our investigation and analyses, namely, choosing allusion according to matters, people, things, places and emotion.As for the way of the using of allusion in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations, we carry out a detailed analysis of it from the following four angles. From the nature of chosen allusion, there are two categories of the way of using allusion in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations, namely, quoting words and quoting story. From the relation between the original meaning of chosen allusion and its pragmatic meaning, the way of using allusion in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations can be divided into five categories, namely, synonymous allusion, allusion by transferring meaning, allusion by generating meaning, antonymous allusion and allusion by pun. From the function of chosen allusion, the way of using allusion can be divided into four categories, that is, using allusion as testimony, using allusion as lining words, using allusion by replacing names and using allusion by replacing words. From the amount of chosen allusion, there are two categories of the way of using allusion, that is, single and double using allusion.The rhetorical effect of using allusion is also obvious in the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations. To sum up, this rhetorical effect is concretely embodied from the following two aspects. The first one is the promoting effect. This rhetorical effect can be also embodied from the following four aspects, namely, promoting the persuasion of argument to enhance its credibility, promoting the distinction of the narrative object to strengthen its appeal, promoting the typicality of the narrative object to enhance its expressive force and promoting the elegance of the descriptive object and language in the poems. The second one is the tortuous effect. In other words, the authors of the poems in Tang Dynasty’s imperial examinations may express his own thought and emotion that he wanted to express in an implicit and euphemistic way so as to avoid the straightness and mediocrity of the poems. In this way, the aesthetic interest in the poems can be improved.The fourth part is the conclusion of this paper. This part mainly makes a conclusion of the research situation of the whole paper and points the inadequacy of the research and puts forward the plan and train of thought of further research.
