This research explores the impact of Lingnanism on Taiwan fine arts and the historical role of Lingnanism in Taiwan. The development of Lingnanism so far has been about one hundred years of history. Lingnanism successors, who experienced wars and left hometowns, still adhere to their own style:combination of Chinese and Western and fusion of simplified and complex. Therefore, their creative works still retain this basic concept. This basic idea often appears in Taiwanese modern Chinese painting field. This research can not only analyze this phenomenon and conclude a historic position but also point out recommendations to today’s Taiwan Lingnanism and its future. There are many books and essays about Lingnanism in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong in decades. However, it is relatively rare to publish a book which emphasizes on the impact of Lingnanism on Taiwanese Chinese painting field since the late half of 20th century. Therefore, this research, which will study the process of development in the form of PhD dissertation, is one of the few full-length researches.This article will analyze the history of Lingnanism spreading to Taiwan and the history of modern art in Taiwan, investigate the first Lingnanism artists who influenced Taiwan fine art filed as well as contemporary artists who later influenced by Lingnanism, and conclude the developments and challenges of Lingnanism in Taiwan. Because the works of many artists in Taiwan have Lingnanism artistic style, the analysis of Lingnanism development in Taiwan will be helpful to understand the contemporary ink artists and the future of Taiwan ink art. In addition, Taiwan’s modern art education and Lingnanism spread in Taiwan are closely associated with each other, so it helps to construct part of the context of contemporary art education in Taiwan. Before Lingnanism spread the perspective and the different colors which derived from parts of traditional Chinese painting to Taiwan, it had been influenced by Japanese art of the Meiji Restoration for 50 years after, when Japan’s art is very similar to Lingnanism. Therefore, this essay will also analyze the influence of Japanese art on Lingnanism in Taiwan. Furthermore, in recent one hundred years Taiwanese art is subject to political influence which means that varied political atmosphere affects Taiwan’s art directions. Nowadays, under the special social situation of Taiwan, those with local awareness intend to exclude of Chinese culture, representing the spirit of traditional Chinese art neglected and rejected by some people. It is an issue that how Lingnanism continually grows and develops in this situation. This essay will explore more in-depth.The basic knowledge of Taiwan art about color and shape is based on art education during Japanese period. The most important impact of Lingnanism on Taiwan is more use of fusion with the Chinese traditional culture philosophy and skills as well as to provide more choices for artistic talents in the late 20th century, focusing on Taiwan local realism. Under the special social situation in Taiwan in recent years, how Lingnanism regards itself? This paper argues that those who want to continue to carry forward the spirit of Lingnanism should pay attention to the basic spirit of Lingnanism, namely innovation and integration, instead only lasting fixed style which has used for one hundred years. As a result, Lingnanism in Taiwan can certainly cope with the changing times and produce continuous innovation.
