With the progress and development of human society, professionalization and specialization have increasingly become a trend and a manifestation of external differentiation in the society day by day, which illustrates that people’s cognition to nature, society and themselves is increasingly deepened. It is a symbol and a sign of human civilization. In the thousands of years of human history, being a teacher, as a job, early presents its characteristics of profession. For instance, Confuciussaid,“instructingothers indefatigably”. Han Yu emphasized in Words of Teachers that “The ancient scholars must have been taught by their teachers. Teachers are those people who teach others and solve puzzles.” Those rich descriptions are about teachers’ professional qualities by our Chinese ancestors, which is still valuable and enlightening to current teachers’ professional qualities.Education is the foundation of national development in the long run and teachers are the significant factors for education. Nowadays, countries in the world are trying to find out the breakthrough for educational reform, and to recognize and reevaluate teachers and the professional status of their jobs. They are all focusing on teachers’ professional development and the quality of teaching. Besides, they are all trying to set up measuring standards for teachers’ professionalization. Teachers will be regarded as the center of schools and teaching. Reforming the education for teacher must be the point-cut of educational reform and it will be an important field of studying education in the world.Many countries have clearly and profoundly realized the research on the education for teachers: the education for teachers as the first ladder to cultivate people has the responsibility to cultivate professional teachers with high qualities. In this case, teachers can provide high-quality education. At present, the core of China’s basic educational reform is the curriculum reform and its key to success is teachers’ qualities. The research on teachers’ professional qualities has become the hot spot of reform. As the research on teachers’ professional qualities goes deeper, the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities has become the focal point. Under this background, the research on competence of art teachers, especially on the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities, has attracted people’s attention and has room to be further improved. The thesis which studies the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities also aims to respond the expectation of teachers’ professional competence by a new turn of basic educational reform from the globe and China.The thesis makes full use of the research achievements made by experts and scholars and pays great attention to the combination of theories and practices, systematically builds the framework for the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities, making full use of the framework to do case researches on the twelve vocal music teachers in Changchun V College. The thesis focuses on the research on the current situation of the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities and its improvement strategies. Through qualitative case research methods, such as literature review, interviewing teachers and a dean, classroom observation, recording, video-analysis and evaluation from five vocal music experts, the author tries to fully understand the current situation of the vocal music teachers in Changchun V College, to explore the existing problems, and to analyze their reasons. Thus, specific and effective improvement strategies can be proposed and enrich research significance of vocal music teachers.The thesis consists of two parts, namely the introduction and the body. The part of introduction mainly introduces the research background, the research value and the research problems. The body has seven chapters: In Chapter One, relevant concepts are defined and there is a literature review of relevant researches in foreign countries, which lays the solid foundation for the demonstration in the thesis; In Chapter Two, the researcher adopts the qualitative case research, making research ideas clear, collects, arranges and analyzes research data of research problems and research objects; In Chapter Three, the researcher theoretically states the structure of the professional competence of vocal music teachers in colleges and universities from the perspectives of vocal music teachers’ professional affection, knowledge and competence; In Chapter Four, on the basis of theoretical statement, the researcher conducts surveys and summarizes the current situation of the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities and its existing problems; In Chapter Five, the researcher analyzes three respects influencing the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities, namely the subjective factors, the professional development of vocal education and its mechanism; In Chapter Six, training strategies for the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities are proposed; In Chapter Seven, there are research conclusions, suggestions and expectations.Interviewing the twelve vocal music teachers and relevant personnel in the case college for 36 times as well as finishing 24 classroom observations and 4 analysis, the researcher finds that the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities has been obviously improved at present. For instance, teachers’ educational background, vocal music techniques and the vocal music teaching level have been made great progress. However, there are also some problems. The thesis mainly has three research conclusions as follows: The first conclusion is that the structure of the professional affection of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities shows that their attitudes to their dreams are active but their subjective initiative is not strong. The second conclusion is that the professional knowledge structure of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities emphasizes on basic knowledge, while it pays less attention to music appreciation and comprehensive qualities of humanity and art. The third conclusion is that the structure of the professional competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities pays more attention to basic skills, while it pays less attention to the abilities of scientific research and innovation and it ignores comprehensive teaching objectives.It is generally known that normal colleges and universities for music are higher education institutions which cultivate music teachers for schools at different levels. They are cradles for cultivating music teachers for primary and secondary schools. Meantime, normal colleges and universities for music play irreplaceable roles in China’s system for music education. The competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities is the key to success for China’s reform of vocal music education. Therefore, constantly studying and improving the competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities is the road which must be taken for the reform and development of China’s basic music teaching and education.The researcher hopes that the thesis can attract the attention of the government, colleges and universities, and vocal music teachers in colleges and universities to the connotation, the value and the meaning of the competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities. The researcher also hopes that the thesis can contribute to the research on the competence of the vocal music teachers in colleges and universities, and it can make contributions to the prosperity of the vocal music education in colleges and universities. However, due to the researcher’s limitations in such respects as the time for research, the researcher’s knowledge and research conditions, all those factors lead to the defects in this research.
