’Dzam gling rgyas bshad is the earliest complete masterpiece of world geography in Tibetan language from the perspective of a Tibetan, thus the importance of its status in cultural and historiography history is needless to say. The writer Fourth Smin-grol No-mon-han is thereby known as "the first Tibetan who has the vision of the whole world".’Dzam gling rgyas bshad is even a little earlier than Hai-guo-tu-zhi and Ying-huan-zhi-lue which were published after the first Opium War.Therefore it’s also an unavoidably important document in Chinese geographical history and the field of cultural exchange between China and the western World. The early studies on ’Dzam gling rgyas bshad tend to focus on the Tibetan section. However the emphasis of this paper is the text of the European section, intending to reveal that how the Tibetans "discover" the western world from their own Buddhist vision and geographical framework, and how the new geographical knowledge exerts effects on their "background book".This paper is divided into two parts, one is the "research section" while the other is the "text section".In the "research section",the author tries to elaborat six topics which have been rarely or incorrectly discussed by the academe, including the circulating of ’Dzam gling rgyas bshad’s different manuscripts, the experience and excursion of the writer, when ’Dzam gling rgyas bshad was accomplished, the knowledge sources of ’Dzam gling rgyas bshad, and also the related etymological research. In the "text section",the author makes a comparative study on three manuscripts of ’Dzam gling rgyas bshad, and then translates and comments on a critical edition of the European section. There is also a glossary and photocopy of the manuscripts attached to the end of the "text section".
