An excellent female wirter occurred in the literature arena of South Korea in1970s and shewas Pu Wanxu (1931-2011), Pu Wanxu is well-known in South Korea. Pu Wanxu hadcontinuously written novels for about40years since she published Bare Wood,a novel in1970s inthe literature arena of South Korea. In her wirting career of about40years, she had kept theflourishing writing capacity all the time and published15novels and about140novelles and shortstories. In addition, she published many flash fictions, informal essays, travel notes, fairy tales, some collections of proses and collections of fairy tales. Pu Wanxu entered the literature arenavery late, but she was a productive writer. Once her works were published, they would sell well. The reason that Pu Wanxu,s works in the great favor of readers is that she was a female writer, who was good at analyzing the psychological activities of characters from the unique perspectiveof a female and capturing all the contradictions in the life. Her literal^words were sharp and spicy, got to the truth with a single pierce. Hei writing style was meaningful and fresh. She was carefuland considerate. The real world that she built was outstanding and unique. Her remarkablecontribution in the literature field made her win a series of honors and a lot prizes. However, shehad not been contented with her own achievements all the time. She devoted herself to pursue thehigher realm of art. In her works, she, with the speciifc acute observation force and sensing forceof a female, integrating her persona! experience and combining her own understandings showed alot of wounds brought about by the war and violence and obsolete social reality, disclosed thesocial life brought about by materialism and ex’posed the aged peoples life full of loneliness, poverty, foreignization and death. In her writings, the life problems caused by the war andseparation, the urban problems caused by industrialization, the aging problems caused by thegrowth of ages and the female problems, etc. have become the keen social problems and lifeproblems. Therefore, her works have aroused the great attention of readers. As a female writer, sheentered the literature arena when she was40years old and still actively created works when shewas70years old. All these have been rarely seen in the literature arena of South Korea and it wasalso a myth created by Pu Wanxu in the modern literature history of South Korea. The thesis is divided into three parts.Part I is the introduction. It mainly includes the overview, presentation of the topic andsummary of the structure of the thesis. Great attention has been paid to P,u Wanxus literature inthe academic circle. It has become the hot topic in the academic circle and a lot of relevantresearch achievements have been made, but there still exist some disadvantages and weaknesses inthe grasping of Pu Wanxu’S novels as a whole in the research circle. In addition, because PuWanx,us novels represent the multiple specialties, it is diiffcult to seek a subjective spiritualpursuit penetrating the whole process in her novels and many researchers think that it is difficult tocarry out the research of her novels as a whole due to the fickle nature of her novels and there aresome diiffculties in the research on Pu Wanxu,s novels as a whole. Therefore, the thesis takes thethemes as the penetrating clues to carry out the classified research on Pu Wanxu’s novels. They aredivided into four themes, that is, war and separating writings, urbanization writings, agingnarration and female writings. The four themes penetrate Pu Wanxu’s writings in her life and they are also the main lines of the whole thesis. Such a method facilitates the description of PuWanxu’s novels as a whole, descirbing the connotations entitled by Pu Wanxu to these aspects inthe different years and dealing with Pu Wanxu’s novels as a whole so as to objectively think of thewriting characteristics of Pu Wanxu,s novels and enlightenments and contirbution to thecontemporary literature arena. The thesis takes the mode of text analysis, takes analyticalpsychology, feminism, realism, doctirne of life and ecological Marxism, etc. as the theoreticalframework and makes full use of some methods of themes, narration, psychology, sociology andaesthetics, etc. for the research.Part2is the research on Pu Wanxu’s novels, including4chapters.Chapter] mainly analyzes the war and separation writings of Pu Wanxu’s novels. AlthoughPu Wanxu started writing as of40years old,she showed the flouirshing desire and magnificentwriting style in the theme of war and separation. The motive of Pu Wanxu’s writing of novelscame from the "t"estimony of the war and the desire escaping from the soul of her dead elderbrother in the war.【n1970s, Pu Wanxu’s works with the war as theme, taking her own experienceas the premise, mainly described the wounds brought about by the war and ihe reality andseparation contradictions atfer the war and the will of overcoming the contradictions. Her novelsrepresented the memory of the war and scars incurred herein as well as overcoming injures andhealing the wounds. The varieties of attempts made by Pu Wanxu include the true representationof the war process, social criticism novels, growth novels and family separation problems causedby the war, etc. All the novels were finally aimed at surpassing the wounds caused by the war andpursuing the harmony of human beings.Chapter2mainly analyzes the industrialization writings of P’u Wanxus novels. The societyof South Korea entered the industrialized age in19702. Industrialization is the necessary period ofsocial development in a sense. However, because it emphasized the status of money in the societyand life, the social contradictions had become more and more prominent As the recorder of an age,Pu Wanxu deeply felt the negative influences brought about by industrialization. Pu Wanxum withher acute observation of an artist, found the great tragedy of life cultured in the money worship inthe luxurious neon lights. She used her realistic writings to disclose the social ugly aspects hiddenin the showy appearance. The major core content of Pu Wanxu’s novels lies in the criticism of theweaknesses of people in the modern time too ugly to be endured. The writers realistic awarenessof criticism was fully reflected in the typical characters struggling and missed in the commondesires that she described. Pu Wanxu projected the general mood of society to the routine life ofthe middle class at the edge of collapse with her critic eyes. Therefore, she more clearly reflectedthe profoundness and severity of reality. The wri’ters awareness of criticism of industiralizationwas mainly represented in the negative awareness of the routine life, contradictions between strataand alienation between people. Pu Wanxu’s novels not only truly reflected the true face of societyof South Korea having entered industrialization since1970s but also indicated the direction foreliminating the problems. Pu Wanxu、with her profound awareness of criticism, exposed theweaknesses in the common life of the middle class, that is. material better than spiirt, falsity betterthan truth and empty show of strength better than practice. Pu Wanxu felt that the middle classwas contented with the present situation and the real life where people became the slaves ofmaterialism was, in fact, absurd and painful. She set people thinking: the true happiness of aperson comes from the spiritual health but not materials.Chapter3mainly analyzes the aging narration of Pu Wanxu’s novels. She took the aged people as the masters or vividly described the life of the aged people, which was anothercharacteristic of Pu Wanxu’s writings. After Pu Wanxu entered the literature arena^she had paidattention to the life and various problems of the aged people. Pu Wanxu described various imagesof aged people and life of the aged people. She either represented it via the routine trivia orcontinuously broadened people’s vision or reflected them in her works from the multipleperspectives. She captured isolation and repression felt by the aged people by showing the realisticlife of the aged people. The autonomous understanding and examination of life of the aged peopleas well as awareness of tolerance and mediation of the aged people represented in her works werethe active and affirmati’ve writers awareness of Pu Wanxu. In her works*the aged people activelyexplored and adapted to the human life and society with the harmonious attitude. The70-year-oldPu Wanxu described her own experience and reality, which was representation of Pu Wanxu’sawareness. Although Pu Wanxu gradually became old her works of the aged people still madepeople feel the writer’s spirit of freedom.Chapter4mainly analyzes the female wirtings of Fu Wanxu’s works‘Pu Wanxu,a female writer had continuously represented the female problems in her life. Much attentionwas ever paid to feminism in the society of South Korea in1980s. At that time, someworks of Pu Wanxu such as Starting of the Alive Dayst Standing Women and Are You Still Making Dreams?,etc. were of great importance of literature history for the feminist literat’ure. In such a sense, Pu Wanxus works occupied the important status in the short feminist literature history of South Korea, which should not be neglected. The female identify of?u Wanxu’s novels had continuously changed. In this chapter, the process of the female identity from awakening to determination, from antagonism between men and women to ecological Marxism of coexistence and harmonious development of men and women ismainly explored.Part3is the conclusion, mainly including three aspccts: first, the significance of thethesis is pointed out. Based on it, the disadvantages of the thesis are dealt with and the assumptions on the research in the future are finally presented.
