Thesis On The Female Epic Narration Of Yan Geling's Novels

Yan Geling is one of the representative writers among the contemporary new immigrant writers.After reading Yan Geling's work thoroughly,we found that she is good at discovering the complex and changeable female images and is committed to constructing a grand epic narrative for these women.This paper is divided into five parts to study and interpret Yan Geling's novels under the argument of female epic narrative.The introduction part gives a general account of Yan Geling's literary creation,sorts out the current research on Yan Geling at home and abroad.And then,this paper puts forward the innovative research points based on the previous research results.The first chapter focuses on the female image growth narrative of Yan Geling's work under the major historical and cultural contexts,and narrate the female image growth under the political and historical contexts and the context of sino-western cultural conflict and family traditional culture.The political and historical context is mainly concerned with the Anti-Japanese War and the Cultural Revolution.The context of cultural conflict between the east and the west is centered on the immigrant trend.As a representative writer of the new immigrants genre,Yan Geling narrated the growth history of women under the background with her own experience.The traditional context of family culture mainly describes the “rebellious growth” of contemporary women in traditional family culture,which is also a kind of intersection and conflict between the old and new cultures.The second chapter mainly analyzes the techniques and strategies used by Yan Geling in writing complex and changeable female images.First of all,the female's childhood is usually avoided in Yan Geling's narration,and she chooses to narrate from the adult-side as the starting point and reflects the social and historical changes with the female's complete life.Secondly,it is a kind of personal experience.Yan Geling puts her own experience into artistic creation so as to shape a special female image.The third is to use a unique flexible narrative perspective and time to describe the female image.Finally,Yan Geling would place the characters in the real historical space and time,so that the small characters and the board history can complement each other for the sake of making these women more real and vivid.The third chapter is to praise the character of “ Earth Mother” of female image.Thewomen in Yan Geling's works almost all lack the presence of father image in their growth in which the father dies or the father doesn't care.This makes these female images are covered with a layer of “Earth Mother” brilliance.These excellent characters,such as independence,patience,kindness,suffering and self-sacrifice,can be found in the female characters in Yan Geling's novels.The last chapter compares Yan Geling's works in the field of contemporary female literature.Different from Bing Xin's carols full of maternal love,Yan Geling's creative consciousness is about a woman bearing miserable sufferings.Different from Eileen Chang's awareness of women's judgment about ugliness,Yan Geling's description of women is a paean to the true,the good and the beautiful.Unlike Wang Anyi's literary creation about women-image who is desiring for love,Yan Geling devotes herself to creating selfless women with great love and no desire.In the creation of female-concerned literature,Yan Geling and her works are quite unique.
