Gender discrimination is a social problem and also is a language problem. In recent decades, the gender discrimination in language has received researchers’special attention. People have realized that gender discrimination has a negative impact on the development of language and eliminating gender discrimination in language is the only way to create a harmony of language environment. Study of gender discrimination in language is not only helpful to comprehensively understand a nation’s language, but also helpful to promote the development of language and society and helpful to contribute the language planning. On the other hand, it plays an important role in promoting gender equality and building a harmonious society.Recently researchers have paid more attention to gender discrimination in Chinese and many related studies have been made. Comparative research across languages is also quite common. But only comparative studies of gender discrimination in Chinese and English are popular. We can hardly find the comparative studies between Chinese and other languages, including Vietnamese. China and Vietnam have geographical proximity and cultural similarity. Gender discrimination is existed in both Chinese and Vietnamese. There are many similarities and also differences of it’s performance in the two languages. In this paper, we study the causes that create those similarities and also differences between Chinese and Vietnamese. We also discuss measures of preventing gender discrimination.This paper is divided into five chapters. The introduction part introduces the reason of choosing the topic, significance and innovation of the study, current status of related research, scope and methods of the study. The first chapter introduces the basic theories used in the study and the concept of gender discrimination. The second chapter describes the discrimination against women in Chinese and Vietnamese. This is one the content focus. In our opinion, the discrimination against women in Chinese and Vietnamese has a variety of performance and it can be divided into five categories. The second chapter describes the discrimination against men in Chinese and Vietnamese. The fourth chapter studies the causes of gender discrimination from four perspectives, including social background, cultural background, gender roles, and people’s cognitive mode and discusses measures of preventing gender discrimination. In the conclusion, we summarize the similarities and differences similarities and differences of gender discrimination in Chinese and Vietnamese.According to the results of our study, gender discrimination does exist in both Chinese and Vietnamese and most of which is discrimination against women. Gender discrimination in Chinese and Vietnamese hinders the social development and hinders the full equality between men and women. It also affects the purify of Chinese and Vietnamese language. Preventing and gradually removing gender discrimination in Chinese and Vietnamese is an urgent task. We need an effort of the whole society to accomplish this difficult task, requiring the joint efforts of the whole society.
