Ji Yun(《集韵》)was being compiled in the first year of Jingyou era (1034), when it had been 26 years after the enactment of Guangyun(《广韵》)The compiling of Rhyming Dictionary in the early Song Dynasty was often closely linked with the imperial examinations, so that the compiling of Ji Yun was originated from the controversial issues in the imperial examinations, such as phonological, rhyming, philological problems. Ji Yun is informative and valueable for reserching. To the phonology studies on Ji Yun, on the one hand, could be a specialized topic on comparative phonological characteristics of Ji Yun with Guangyun, on the other hand, could also be the comprehensive comparison of Ji Yun with Guangyun, then considering their nature, be continue to discuss in-depth of the immutability of phonetic. Absorbed previous studies, our study was based on newly published version of Ji Yun, and the using of computers to establish the database of Ji Yun and Guangyun. We should have a comprehensive comparison of the two books of syllable, fanqie sound glosses, and the nature of the similarities and differences in this paper. The first chapter observed and studied on the process of compiling Ji Yun and its purpose; then introduced the version of Ji Yun, our designment and establishment the Ji Yun and Guangyun database, the addition of the character library and the software of inputing and quering system, but also the content and regulations of Ji Yun as compared with Guangyun, through which we know that the editing of Ji Yun embodied four aspects, suck as be well-grounded, comprehensive, stylized, and precise. The Second chapters detailed a comprehensive comparison of Ji Yun and Guangyun, elicited the contents of syllables added, deleted, merged, changed, transferred, etc., and by examining the sources and nature of fanqie, we discussed the similarities and differences between two books. According to statistics of this paper, two books had 3703 sets of corresponding syllables, and also 111 transferred corresponding syllables between inter-Rhymes(通用韵),Put all of them compared with total 3875 sets of Guangyun’s syllables, that accounted for 98.4%. Ji Yun added 672 sets of syllables, there were 423 sets filled the blank of phonological syllables of Guangyun, which were in line with Guangyun’s phonological system. Ji Yun deleted 61 sets of syllables oi Guangyun, on the one hand because of the analysis of Guangyun’s syllables was not very reasonable or the syllables did not record the sound of certain words, so they were merged, on the other hand, because of the effects of oral language during Ji Yun was compiling, for example, two syllables between inter-rhymes, which were with same initials and final medial were even merged, that reflected the oral language in the Song Dynasty with great reality. Ji Yun changed the characters of Guangyun’s fanqie which represented other initial with same manner and place of articulation into the right initial, recorded the devoicing of initials, and also had the situation of using characters in near rhymes to represent the finals. Ji Yun’s editor were deliberated to merge inter-rhymes which were distinguished by medial -u-, such as Zhen(真),Zhun(è°†),Han(å¯'),Huan(æ¡“),Ge(æŒ),Guo(弋),Yin(æ®·),Wen(æ–‡),but taking into account the framework of the 206 rhyme, so the merging was not carried through to the end.Chapter Four fully detailed comparison of the character’s pronunciations and shapes of Ji Yun and Guangyun, also the lexical preferences of them, the merits and defects of them. Then detailed investigations in differents of Yun and Guangyun whether they had been reflecting the influence on phonological structure. Ji Yun has 11,218 glyphs more than Guangyun. most of them have no relationship with phonological system and mainly expaned the collection of characters. There are 9948 characters in this part which are monosyllabic words. The syllables adding and deleting of Ji Yun was not due to newly characters. The diversification of initials and finals which relected in Ji Yun had different ways, the former mainly found in characters’ pronunciation, the after one mainly found within the different rhymes.Through the above studies, we have the conclusion, that Ji Yun is still within the framework of Qieyun (《切韵》)’phonological system, but it is not so pure as Guangyun, of course, it is not to say, that Ji Yun is exactly the same as Guangyun. The fanqie of Ji Yun surely has different sources, there has requirement to find appropriate place settling the materials which have different sources. While most of them are whithin the phonological structure, but some of them are not. This paper also discussed on how to continue deepening the comparative study of the character’s pronunciation of Ji Yun and Guangyun.
