In modern Chinese literature and cultural history, from The poem Weekly, The Drama weekly to The Crescent monthly, The Poem Quarterly, the intellectuals of The Crescent monthly always hope to realize their literary ideals and political aspirations through media activities. The Crescent monthly, advocated by the fraternity of this journal, committed to the pursuit of full freedom of the media, self-reflective sense of social responsibility, and the basic principles of liberal ideas and values, is one of the typical representative of free median is the 20s and 30s of the wentieth century. Oriented on this point, based on communication theories, this dissertation systematically and comprehensively studies the free media of The Crescent monthly from the dual angle of cultural and literary view.First of all, in order to explore the media environment in which the subject of study lies, this dissertation attempts to have an overall investigation of the media ecology during the period of 54 movement before the founding of The Crescent monthly: at first, the vertical traces of the origin of modern printing media and the development process of the occurrence are made; then the historical background of the media is presented from the angle of political economy, culture, educational and other aspects of the changing times; and finally a summary of the overall pattern of the media is concluded. Starting from the focus of media content,the author attempts to trace down the developmental path of free media ever since it came into being.Secondly, The Crescent monthly as a journal of fraternity and a free media, has its unique characteristics, compared with other the printing media in general. Principal part of this media is composed of the fraternity of the journal. Most of them are liberal intellectuals, ever studied in Europe and America. They have aristocratic literary ideas and ambitious goals of transforming society. At the same time, in literary proposition and the principle of humanness, they follow the order of reason, which is respected by elegant gentlemen culture. From the media system point of view, the colleagues of The Crescent monthly take the form of non-official co-operative fund-raising shares to ensure the necessary economic base of this journal, and the implementation of the collective edition helps not only the co-operative organization of manuscript but also the independent exercise of the right of editors. As far as the way of transmission is concerned, The Crescent monthly integrated ont only the editting, publication and distribution but also the journal The Crescent monthly Bookstore and other journals, which conributes to a complex communication of multi-media in content. Due to the membership composition, cultural level and concerns of interest with the remarkable characteristics of fraternal orientation,elite orientation and political orientation of its colleagues, this journal is warmly welcome by its readers. Thirdly, this dissertation investigates systematically by means of close interpretation the content of The Crescent monthly, focusing on those debate, political argument, literary works published in this journal. Many subtopics such as the proletariat literature, revolutionary literature and the popularity of literature derived from the core debates of human nature and class theory in literature between Liang Shih-chiu and Lu Xun, plus their differences in translation issues, Lu and Liang became a pair of enemies in the twentieth-century Chinese literary circle. The political comments by Hu Shi, Liang Shih-chiu, and Lo Lung-chi constitute the soul of this journal. The advocate of human rights and the defense of such basic values as freedom, democracy and rule of law are the distinctive features of the magazine’s becoming a free media. Literary creation and translation is the major concerns of The Crescent monthly, which witnesses the change of Crescent school, which is also the cradle of this school. Achievements have also been made in other forms of literary works. The literary practice of the journal The Crescent monthly reflects the basic profile and unique character of "Crescent literature "Finally, the fame of The Crescent monthly for the continuing concern with social and political issues, to some extent, reinforced the cultural spirit of its colleagues, cultivated the audience’s attention to public affairs,and speeded up the pace of the improvement for the authority. The Crescent School, named after the journal The Crescent monthly, tried their best to horizontally transplant liberalism’s basic values and ideals with the communicational platform of The Crescent monthly. They resolutely defended the freedom of expression, protested the authority’s control of media, and with the dedicated practice of media, they expanded the scale of expression and the boundaries of the public domain.The media properties, operational modalities and development process of The Crescent monthly, had a positive value and influence at that time because this journal set a good example for the intellectuals’ commitment to social responsibility and maintaining its own independence, and it also provided not only a reference for China’s road of liberalism but also some enlightening for the development of fraternal and free media.
