On The Cultivation Of The Volunteer’s Sense Of Responsibility In Volunteerism

Along with the society’s deep understanding and practical exploring of volunteerism, the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility is proposed as an important practical issue. To study and explore the significance and effect of the cultivation in voluntary practice is not only an important subject of the cultivation of volunteers in China in this new period, but also an inevitable requirement for the socialization of voluntary activities. In this paper, the author will closely associate the cultivation of the sense of responsibility with the requirement for volunteerism for the individual sense and explore to form a practical mode of the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility under the guidance of volunteerism.To treat the formation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility in volunteerism as a mode of cultivation and to systematically understand and grasp the system of the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility under the guidance of volunteerism, the following main questions must be answered at first: firstly, what’s the relationship of the content of the sense of responsibility and the requirement for volunteerism; secondly, how can the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility be possible; thirdly, what are the elements for the formation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility in volunteerism and what’s the logic start of the cultivation; fourthly, what’s the purpose and rules of the cultivation; fifthly, how do various aspects of the system of the cultivation operate in the process of cultivating the volunteer’s sense of responsibility. Closely relating and linking to each other,these five questions together constitute the major practical issues in the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility in volunteerism.Conceptually, the sense of responsibility means the individual’s social and psychological phenomenon based on specific cultural and interpersonal relationship and it is the individual’s emotional requirements and psychological attitudes to recognize and fulfill responsibilities. The sense of responsibility is characterized by autonomous and normative, which conform to the requirements for volunteerism. Innature, however, the sense of responsibility isn’t possessed of the selflessness as that of volunteerism, because responsibility is passively “given” and is compulsory as natural law. This paper argues that it is the altruism and normative of the sense of responsibility that can make the volunteers form self-awareness and the sense of participation in public affairs under the guidance of moral responsibility, which is a good complement to the voluntariness in volunteerism.By studying the formation of volunteer’s sense of responsibility from the perspective of volunteerism, this paper claims that the moral consciousness inside the volunteer is an important psychological factor in the formation of individual’s sense of responsibility and a reflection of the volunteer’s morality. From the perspective of morality, the volunteers live morally by their own moral awareness and under the guidance of the volunteerism, which is a key way to the realization of morality. Thus,the volunteers not only achieve their own interests but also improve the public interests through the practice from morality to the conduct of morality.Starting from the common point of responsibility and morality, the cultivation of the sense of responsibility is an important part of morality education. Since the latter can be thought, the former is feasible in practice. From the perspective of the individual’s psychology, the sense of responsibility is a psychological attitude, whose formation cannot be avoid of the propelling of the individual’s moral responsibility and their recognition of voluntary activities as well as the influence of economic,politic and cultural conditions. Therefore, as an individual, a volunteer’s sense of responsibility cannot be cultivated without the joint efforts of the volunteer and the society in voluntary activities.Specifically, the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility should start from the social reality, respect the subjectivity of the volunteer and lay emphasize on the hierarchy of the cultivation of the sense of responsibility on the basis of the characteristics of volunteerism. Starting from the purpose of the cultivation, we should cultivate the volunteer’s civic consciousness and their ability of moral choice. Thus, the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility needs the joint efforts of both the volunteers and the outside world. This paper holds that thecultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility requires that the individual strengthen the self education of the sense of responsibility in voluntary activities, that the government as the governor and the promoter of public service provide materialistic, spiritual and institutional resources for voluntary activities and education of responsibility so as to solve the trouble back at home for volunteers and strengthen the individual’s sense of responsibility, and that the society as the position of voluntary practice provide platform for the practice of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility, promote the spirit of responsibility and create a kind of social environment in which“everyone is responsible”.Generally, the study of the practice of the cultivation of the volunteer’s sense of responsibility in volunteerism in this paper is actually an explore for the practical mode of the cultivation, which aims to promote the volunteer’s recognition of the existence of responsibility on the emotional level, in turn, to externalize the subjective will to the voluntary practice so as to improve the effectiveness of the voluntary service from the perspective of consciousness, which provides a new thought and lesson for the cultivation of individualization and socialization of volunteerism. Thus,this paper is significant to and valuable for the popularization and development of volunteerism nowadays.
