What are the people’s expectations for college students? They want them to pursue truth in the academic palace, be capable of great achievements and adhere to principles, and then improve public morals, lead the society, create social welfare, and provide services.The intellectuals would arouse criticism of people in the society often if they are materialized, secularized, and intent on nothing but profit.Nowadays in the society, college students must first of all know right from wrong, distinguish good from evil, be close to good teachers, choose helpful friends, and emulate those better than themselves, so as to be "the state’s elite;" confronting contradictions of tradition and modernism, barrier between local region and international world, and impact of Chinese culture and Western culture, how to have correct thought, compromise, accept or reject, discriminate between good and bad, or decide which is suitable for themselves depends on extensive learning, getting close to teachers, making discussions on knowledge and erudition, and choosing friends.The results of Taiwan’s higher education development in recent ten years are that the universities stand in great numbers, are in the saturated state, and have unprecedented development; the teachers colleges that cultivate teachers of elementary schools face the greatest impact.Owing to the proclamation and enforcement of Teacher Education Law, each university could choose to establish the teachers education program, and "everyone can be a teacher;" moreover, under the impact of the trend of fewer children, there is disequilibrium of demand and supply of teachers, and the teachers college that took cultivating teachers as the sole purpose of running a school in the past faced the choices of changing the system, transformation, or merger; we may say that it got bogged down in crisis, and there was a turning point everywhere.The teachers college certainly must adapt to the university development of this tide, and make reaction and reformation; taking National Taichung University of Education as an example mainly, the researcher inspected how National Taichung University of Education reacted, solved the predicaments it faced after transformation and sought opportunities, grasped its nature’s advantages and weakness during transformation, solved the possible contradictions and conflicts brought by transformation, and thus established the features, and became a university of excellent teaching. Contrasting the concrete experiences of transformation of Teachers College and Ming Chuan University with transition and development of universities, the research was beneficial for university’s role orientation; it adhered to the ambition of "saving the nation by education" to deliberate the mission of the university for the objective of being favorable to reach the states of strong nation and wealthy people, and long period of political stability.Education is a university’s mission, and research is the soul of university; college students shall explore truth and have both feet on the ground; the university must have balanced local and international development, have balance in professional skills and knowledge of general education, infuse culture into science, and become a self-supporting, balanced, and pure university of excellence.
