Ethnic interests are indispensable for the survival and development of an ethnic groupand have core status in ethnic relations. From the perspective of whether a certainkind of interest can be possessed and consumed by different stakeholders, differentinterests have different characteristics, and thus have different impact on ethnicrelations. The thesis investigates some basic patterns of ethnic relations under thespecial ethnic structure of “Diversity in Unity” in China, analyzes the ideas andpolicies of CPC and Chinese government in coordinating ethnic interest relations andtheir characteristics and problems. The thesis also explores how to improve interestrelationship in multi-ethnic nations. The introduction includes the germ of the selected topic, its theoretical and practicalsignificance, literature review, related research methodology and its main innovation.Chapter one clarifies the definition of interest and ethnic interest, and defines theirconnotation in this thesis. This chapter also points out that there are two differentlevels of meaning of ethnic interest, and the ethnic interest relations in China includerelations between different ethnic groups and relations between different ethnicgroups and the Chinese nation. This thesis mainly discusses the interest relationshipbetween different ethnic groups. The second chapter analyzes some basic patterns of interest relationship betweendifferent ethnic groups in multi-ethnic countries, pointing out that in areas likeeconomic development and social stability, the ethnic relation is complementary andmutually beneficial. However, when it comes to allocation of scarce resources such aspower, due to interest differences the relationship between ethnic groups are highlyemulative. Depends on whether the interest difference can be successfully coordinated, the ethnic relation might be a complex of competition and cooperation, or ultimatelyends in conflict and strife.People’s Republic of China is a socialist country, which is leaded by the CommunistParty of China. The CPC plays a crucial role in the process of coordinating ethnicinterest relations. Chapter three historically investigates the thoughts, principles andpolicies of CPC and the Chinese government on ethnic interest, and analyzes itsintrinsic characteristics and challenges facing the new era.Based on the former analysis, Chapter four explores new paths to coordinate ethnicinterest relations in the new era. The author believes that the CPC and its governmentshould eliminate improper obstacles and create a harmonious environment when itcomes to the interest areas where ethnic relations are symbiotic and complementary. In the areas where interest differences are obvious and can be coordinated, the CPCand the government must uphold principles like ethnic equality, national unity andcommon prosperity, expand ways and means to coordinate interest, and pay enoughattention to the balance of interests. As for exclusive interest, such as pursuit ofindependence from multi-ethnic nations, sabotage national unity and integrity, whichpose serious threats to the common interests of all ethnic groups and the ChineseNation, it is absolutely necessary to refute the fallacy on issues like the right of national self-determination, take decisive measures to strengthen national identity andenhance inter-ethnic exchanges. What is more, the government also needs to curb anyactivities which are harmful to the national integrity by international cooperation andinternal legislation. The last section of this thesis summarizes the main opinions and clarifies some issuesfor further research. From a macro perspective, this thesis studies some basic patterns of ethnic interestrelations in multi-ethnic countries. This thesis emphasizes the differentiation betweenthe study as it ought to be and the study as it is, and attempts to provide some usefulthinking and recommendations for the solution to the ethno-national problems ofChina.
