Selecting this subject as my doctoral thesis is because of one of my confusion, that is when the attention of the media and academia are focused on four major alliances in American professional sports (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB), why there exists another type of professional sports:individual professional sport, which also attracted widespread attention of the media and fans but not of the academic field. Traditional individual sport includes golf, tennis singles tournament, bowling, swimming, bike, boxing, etc. In recent years, a variety of non-traditional individual sport emerges constantly, such as various types of extreme sports, motocross, snowboarding and skateboarding, etc..In the past few decades, a lot of individual sport improves fast with the help of sound development of television media technology, which even shows a great potential of surpass the traditional collective project.Timely focus on individual professional sport will make the research of professional sports more complete, so this thesis choose professional tennis as the entry point for the study of individual professional sport and the institutional evolution of professional tennis. New Institutional Economics is selected as research perspective, institutional arrangements, transaction costs, property rights theory, theory of the firm, and other theoretical tools are employed to analyze the institutional origin, development and innovation of professional tennis, which constitutes the six chapters of this study as follows:Chapter1, elaborate the origin of ancient tennis and modern tennis and their system development.Chapter2, based on the difference between team sport and individual sport, the characteristics of professional tennis and the institutional evolution are explored.Chapter3, the evaluation system, the fundamental institution of professional tennis, is analyzed.Chapter4, Employ the theory of transaction costs and property rights as tools to analyze the influences of players human resources capital property rights, professional tournament structure of property rights, organization building and free-agency system to property rights system, and based on the above analysis to compare the difference between team sport and individual sport.Chapter5, Introduce the derived institution of professional tennis, including the evolution of ranking system as well as the game system and its rules;...
