In the condition of reform and opening up policy and the socialist marketeconomy, the effectiveness of school moral education in our country meets withsevere external shock, whereas the MEFOSE (MEFOSE is short for moral educationfunction of social education, and the same below) has long been ignored, which is theobjective reality that the modern moral education is facing. Social education is thebasic form and eternal existence of human education, which is complemented andpromoted mutually with school education. The inner moral education of socialeducation plays an inevitable role in the construction of a harmonious social order.Thus, we must abandon the fixed idea that moral education is school education, and atthe same time of innovating school moral education, we must strengthen thetheoretical research of MEFOSE, establish the moral education status of MEFOSE,and explore the realization rule of MEFOSE, which will have fundamental andlong-term significance to the construction of socialist harmonious society, and to theall-round development of people.The MEFOSE is the summation effect of various moral education for peopleinfluenced in social life by social system, social organization, mass media, socialactivities, community culture and interpersonal communication, the basic nature ofwhich is the diversification of implementation subject and the education for all thepeople. In practice, MEFOSE has the features of autonomy, creativity,communicationand situation, which reflects the subjectivity cultural consciousness for people topursue the life meaning and spiritual value, and it is the intrinsic mechanism of selfadjusting and perfecting for social moral order.The study of the theoretical evolution of MEFOSE can not only prove theobjective existence of MEFOSE, but also can further explore the cognitivedevelopment logic of MEFOSE. This study makes an attempt to divide the theory ofMEFOSE into three stages, namely, the mixobiosis stage with various educationalthoughts, the relative independence stage, and the trend of integration stage. Itdiscovers that the three stages of social moral educational thoughts underwent fromthe attention to social life moral ethics, to the advocating of humanitarian assistanceethics, and finally to the pursuit of perfect social personality ethics. This dialecticalprocess of thought shows that the connotation of MEFOSE is becoming fuller andmore comprehensive, besides, it pays much more attention to the realization of moral education for all the people, which reflects the involution of MEFOSE to humannature.MEFOSE has the objective existence and the key point is its true realization, thedegree of which is different in different historical periods. According to Marxistthree-stage theory of social development, the realization of MEFOSE displays thedynamic historical development periods of being the core domination, overallweakness and comprehensive realization with the changing relationships of humancommunication, which shows that the realization of MEFOSE has the causalrelationship with people’s social relation structure. This relativity has been furtherproved in the historical investigation of social moral education practice in China. Thus,the rule of MEFOSE realization is explored tentatively, that is, the difference of socialrelation structures determines and limits the different degree of MEFOSE realization.In the person-dependent stage, the MEFOSE can be realized only in life ethics; in thematerial-dependent stage, the MEFOSE is restrained because of people’s atomicsurvival way; with the social relation of freedom and equality, the individual person’sdevelopment is the condition of all people’s free development, and the MEFOSE canbe fully realized.In modern society, the overall structure of human-centered social relations,namely, the relation between human and nature, human and others, human and society,human and himself/herself, meets with the erosion and weakening of instrumentalreason and materialism, which makes the MEFOSE fail to be realized because theobeject can not be generated. In contemporary China, people’s social relation structurealso displays modern changes with the profound changes of subject interest idea,subject justice act, subject significance care and subject value orientation in the rapidsocial transformation. Owing to the fact that the public domain of modern life isexpanding and the traditional community is disappearing, important reference valuecan be drawn from western scholars’ efforts to build the universal system standardwith ethical spirit based on public reason and cultivate people’s moral character withmodern life community, but only with the above two combined closely can we formthe practical logic to break through the dilemma of MEFOSE.In contemporary China, the nature of MEFOSE is the popularization of Marxism.Under the guide of Marxism with Chinese characteristics, we must sublate andsurpass the traditional Chinese social moral education and that of in the period ofRepublic of China, learn actively from the beneficial experience of western social moral education practice and that of the successful experience with the leadership ofChinese Communist Party, with an eye to the generation of new subjects and theconstruction of a new social relation structure in socialist system. As for the selectionof approach to the MEFOSE realization, the key point is that, guided under the corevalues of socialism, we must promote the healthy interaction of the subjects of socialmoral education, and internalize the core values of socialism into people’s code ofconduct; we must adhere to the thought for the purpose of serving the people toconduct social moral education activities, expand gradually the participation subjectsof social moral education, make an effort to realize the popular Marxism with Chinesecharacteristics to reflect its character of Being The People; we must constructcomprehensively the modern social life community and build zealously the people’sspiritual home to cultivate people’s moral personality in the harmonious interaction.
