Research On Contemporary Architectural Thought Under Deleuze’s Philosophy

Since the post-industrial society of the1960s, the boom of informationtechnology, digital technology and complex science have led to the diversifieddevelopment of contemporary architecture and the continuing emergence of noveland intricate architectural language and manifestations. An innovative architecturalmanifestation based on Deleuze’s philosophy came into being among the diversifiedarchitecture creation and a group of pioneer architects and various architecturalworks sprang up correspondingly.These architectural works exhibited considerableinnovation and meet the development needs of the times, which embodied thatDeleuze philosophy was the tremendous impetus to contemporary architecture.Based on the theory of ‘Difference’ by the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, thepaper attempts to articulate the relationship between contemporary architecture andDeleuze’s philosophy, which could be regarded as a tool,by analysing thecomplexity of the contemporary architectural phenomenon, to build up thearchitectural conception and theory adapted to post-industrial society,to guidearchitectural practice and to provide theoretical basis for the interpretation of thecomplex and diverse contemporary architectural works.This dissertation examines the contemporary architecture phenomenoninfluenced by Deleuze’s philosophy and correspondently divide into two aspects:First, from the post-industrial society of the1960s onward,under the influence ofDeleuze’s philosophy, architecture tended to show the character of complexity,difference and diversification reflected by space,structure and shape. At the sametime, under the circumstance of post-industrial society in which informationcivilization and ecology civilization coexisted,the association of informationcommunicating technologies, bio-intelligence technology, Deleuze’s philosophywith architecture entailed the production of the digitized, intelligent, diversifiedarchitectural forms. Second, philosophical conception and theory by Deleuzeassociated with architecture creation is the other aspect of the research. On thefoundation of Deleuze’s ideological framework, theoretical creed and ideologicaltraits,the paper attempts to establish a dialogue between his philosophy andcontemporary architectural creation. Rather than referring to the panorama of thedevelopment of contemporary architecture, the paper focus on architecturalphenomenon related with Deleuze’s philosophy directly or indirectly. Fourfundamental theory of Deleuze’s philosophy are conferred including time-lapsefilm,smooth space,body without organs, dynamic generation, through which toanalyze and review the phenomenon and to explore the innovative forms and characteristics of contemporary architecture,in order to found architectural theorywhich will reflect the times characteristics of information and ecology civilizationand meet the needs of development, and to provide valuable reference for thecontemporary architectural creation.As far as the research method is concerned, Interdisciplinary research underthe guide of Deleuze’s philosophy are provided in the paper to interpret thediversified, complex architecture phenomenon and to analyze objectively theintrinsic characteristics and the development trend of contemporary architecturalcreation. In the whole process of research, macro-theory study and mezzo ideasextraction, combining with micro cases analysis were adopted. Irrationality,difference,Non-logic in Deleuze’s philosophy are introduced to interpreted thedevelopment tendency, generation procedure and form characteristics to obtain anideological analysis of contemporary architectural creation.In the respect of contents, through the systematically combing of theframework of Deleuze’s philosophy including philosophical traits, core concept,creed,etc, the dissertation intends to associate Deleuze’s philosophy witharchitectural creation in time,space,body and ecology. Accordingly, four basictheories of Deleuze’s Philosophy linked with contemporary architecture creation,namely: time-lapse film, smooth space, body without organs, dynamicallygeneration are extracted.Further, the relationship between Deleuze’s Philosophy andcontemporary architecture is clarified and the theoretical conversion platform isbuilt up. Besides,four architecture creation conception are proposed constructively.They are “image” based on time-lapse film theory,“territory” based on smoothspace theory,“Synaesthesia” on body without organs theory,“intermediate field”ondynamic generation. Meanwhile, a large number of cases are quoted to interpretatethese conceptions and to analyze creation technique and characteristics to set up asystematical theory guiding contemporary architecture practice finally.Through the framework of Deleuze’s Philosophy and contemporaryarchitectural theory, it can be perceived that Deleuze Philosophy in time, space,body awareness, eco-development level provides ideological reference andoperation instruction as well as future direction for the contemporary architectureinnovation.
