Modern architects who favor traditional Chinese thought, through their design, strive to see how traditional thinking has been reflected in modern society. Ancient Chinese Gardens, as a branch of ancient Chinese architecture t hat strengthen on Confucius sense and etiquette, demonstrate Taoists? aspiration for freedom as expressed by “Tao models itself after nature”. This unique ancient Chinese thinking, as a general worldview, much different from Western way, could be seen for a rather long period from the design in Southeastern Garden, nearly exerting no influence on modern Architecture design ushered by Bauhaus. It is hereby deeply viewed into as mental origin in the development of garden design. The author, from a general vie w, through several cases, seeks to provide a systemic theory on the combination of the philosophy referred above and modern architecture design, getting the metaphysical thought into explanation practice. The author has studied on this thought in its pragmatic sense, presented and analyzed relating issues and solutions referred by scholars, hence seeking a way for it being applied in modern architecture design. The author elaborates “Tao models itself after nature” from three aspects:analysis of “Tao models itself after nature”; relationship between the philosophy and architecture design;ideas stressed on ancient thinking during design, setting theoretical support for next two passages, which defined architecture design from the aspects of ideas and skills. The ideas in terms of “Tao models itself after nature” have been included: getting clear with the essence of architecture before design, setting relationship between architecture and environment at the start;constructing practical thinking when designing. And the skills based on the thought, viewed from the eastern thinking that stresses on method rather than realization, proposed four methods for dealing with locationsThrough conclusions on the possibilities in the application of Tao into architect ure design, in depth relations between them concerning theoretical origin and development were self evident. Therefore it provided theoretical support for tradition-oriented study on architecture. Other than that study on the relationship between design and architects? character was consequently taken place, based on that the author proposed empirical and natural design with freedom.
