As the representative of the Neoclassical synthesis economics, Paul A.Samuelson successfully realized the third revolutionary synthesis in the history ofeconomic theory and established the theoretical frame of the modern mainstreameconomics. And that the middle road Samuelson advocated have been the basicprinciple of value to formulating micro and macro economic policies and processingthe ethical relationship between market and government.The author thinks that the Neoclassical synthesis is based on the Marshall’s andKeynes’ economic theories, which is not the only continuation as Mill’s and Marshall’s,but should be understood that the western mainstream economic theory backed to itsethical mother so as to face the crisis of modernity. Which kind of value and ethicsspirit has promoted the return? What is the philosophy Samuelson’s economic ethicalthought based on? Can the middle road Samuelson advocated become themethodological principle to expanding our research in the modern economic ethics?What economic ethical issues does the return tell us in the modern economics? Fromthe point of view of Liberalism and Marx, did the return succeed? If did, what werethe advantages and disadvantages?In order to clarify the implication on philosophy, ethics, values and methodologyin Samuelson’s economic, and grasp the mainstream economic ethical thought inwestern countries, this paper uses the method of historical materialism and follows theprinciple of classic hermeneutics to read deeply Samuelson’s classic works. Through acomparative study of domestic and foreign economic ethical theory, this paper tries toreach a fusion of horizons, so as to expand the research dimension of Chineseeconomic ethics, to deepen our understanding of western economic ethical thoughtand to provide the value of economic ethics in support of building a harmonioussociety in China. Specifically, the paper will divide five chapters to launch theelaboration:In the first chapter, this paper will discuss the value orientation of Samuelson’s economic ethical thought according to his personal experience, Jewish spirit theProtestant ethics in his works. In the second chapter, this paper will explore the theoryorigin and the methodological principle from the mechanism, the theoretical imageand the spiritual essence. In the third chapter, this paper will expound the theoreticalcornerstones of Samuelson’s economic ethical thought, which includes the view offreedom, of efficiency and of fairness. In the fourth chapter, this paper will explainSamuelson’s microeconomic ethical thought by taking consumption ethics, tradeethics and distributive justice as examples. In the fifth chapter, this paper will stateSamuelson’s macroeconomic ethical thought mainly focusing on the ethical issues inthe field of finance, employment and inflation. Finally, this paper will evaluatecritically Samuelson’s economic ethical thought from the point of view of Marx,including his theory significance, his theory defects and its contemporary value inChina.
