The purpose of this study is to find out the availability of family therapy to treating the college students who have suicidal tendency. The Suicidal Tendency Questionnaire of College Students (STQCS) is designed to investigate the related family factors of suicidal tendency and to screen out the suitable cases that can be treated by family therapy, and then therapeutic effect is assessed.This study includes three parts. In Study One, participants were418college students, and34-item STQCS was developed. In Study Two, participants were1512college students who were coming from six different colleges, and STQCS was used. The suicidal tendency group and normal group were contrasted, and the self-development reports of22students who had suicidal tendency were analyzed, and the related family factors of suicidal tendency were explored too. In Study Three, three students of suicidal tendency were screened out, one treated by family therapy, one treated by cognitive behavioral therapy, and last one treated as control case. The two experimental subjects were both received8weeks treatment (once a week) and two weeks apart. The pre-post test was used to explore the intervention effect, and the availability of family therapy was analyzed. The main conclusions are as follows:1. The STQCS includes four factors:depression level, suicidal cognitive, suicidal preparation and desperation. The questionnaire has acceptable psychometric indicators:The index of identifying the scale of the project, factorial validity and consistency reliability meets the requirements of psychometric. The questionnaire has good internal consistency reliability, content validity, structure validity and criterion validity.2. There are gender, grade and metal states differences. Freshman year students and Senior grade students have higher suicidal tendency level than Sophomore and Junior grade students, and Senior grade students have highest level. Female students have higher level than male students. Students who have psychotic symptoms have higher suicidal tendency level.3. In family respect, students who grew up from incomplete families have higher suicidal tendency level; the students who have suicidal tendency are lower in family independence, behavioral control and role definition than the students who have no suicidal tendency. 4. The risk factor of college students’ suicidal tendency includes depressive tendency, low family independence, bad family organization and low behavioral control.5. The family therapy has effect in lowering suicidal tendency level, and the effect of family therapy is more significant than cognitive behavioral therapy.6. The effects of family therapy in increasing self-esteem, self-confidence and independence are better than cognitive behavioral therapy.7. The effects of family therapy in increasing family total function, family behavior pattern and role definition are better than cognitive behavioral therapy.8. The effects of family therapy in lowering subject’s suicidal tendency level, improving mental state and family relationship, and restoring social function are better than cognitive behavioral therapy.
