Industrial design of complex products is one of the key technologies to revitalize the manufacturing industry and improve the quality of products.The ?semantics? is a key innovative tool to construct the model of understanding information and share the data.Supported by national longitudinal project,aiming at design of product form,the semantics categories and corresponding semantic features have been researched so as to construct systematic meothd to aid properly the innovative actives of industry design in design process.Firstly,Research were based on the framework of Krippendorff's Product Semantics and aim to build the model of semamtics cognition and transform of complex products-CNC machine tools.Carrying out theoretical study,experimental studies and examples of verification on the basis of user's cognition of CNC machine tools,the knowledge of sample of cases were obtained and expressed,and systematic semantic features framework was established.Then designer's congnitive maps were builed according the experiment of semantic features ' cognition.Context constructing by semantic features and problem solution strategy were applied to build the design context and process model.Finally,the Internet & Computer Aided Industrial Design System based on Semantic Feature Cognition was builted to prove the validity of the study.Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used in this paper,and the theory and method are studied from three aspects of macro,medium and micro level.At the macro level,Based on theory of Product Semantics,the categories of meaning of products design are get.Then,the meaning categories of complex products are defined in detail.Therefore,based on Common coding theoty,verbal semantics,action semantics and product form semantics were used to expree product semantics.At the medium level,the "design object" and "design process" are synthet ically studied based on the case.The semantic features of the complex products are extracted and conversed by using theory of feature recognition,Therbligs,Kansei Engineering,Cognitive Metaphor.Then,the semantic features of icon,index,symbol can be transferred explicitly.Furthermore,the cognition maps of different designers are plotted by the task analysis method to analyze the use of semantic features in the design process.Subsequently,the classical FBS design process model is re-encoded.At the micro level,the underlying data can be provided entirely,which is used by the methods of medium level through the qualitative and quantitative basic methods such as interviews,questionnaires,experiments and protocol analysis according to the cases.Four experiments of the extraction and transformation of the style semantic features,the human factor,the cultural semantic features,and the cognitive chain of semantics feature are constructed in detail.The research contents and results are summarized as following.Firstly,the semantic categories and the semantic cognition and transformation framework of the complex products were constructed.The meaning of product has four categories: Use,Languange,Genesis,Ecology.Using survey and methods of card sort,the design of CNC machine tools include six meaning : structure,human factor,aesthetic,style,family,cultural meanings.The user recognize product by action language and vebal language,designers use product form language to express meaning.Through common encode thoery,the semantic information can be completly expressed.The semantic cognition and transformation framework of the complex products refer to Ways and Means that the user cognitive semantics converted to symbolic semantics,index semantics and icons semantics of product semantic and semantic features.Designer implements innovative design by context awareness.A theoretical basis was provided for extracting semantic features of complex products in next chapter.Secondly,the systematic frame of semantic features is established.Using experimental and feature extraction method,The semantic features of icon,index,symbol of CNC machine tools were extracted.The icon semantic features included Volume,Treatment,Graphic elements.Index semantic features included action elements.Symbol semantic features have style elements,cultural elements.The systematic semantic features framework of complex product show the relations between different semantic features,and transform clue of abstract semantic features to concrete ones.the semantics features frame provides the basis for building context and process model and computer-aided design systems.Thirdly,the context and process model based on semantic features is presented.Using cognitive experimental methods,the cognitive maps of designers' design process were constructed.The relationship between the designer's way of thinking and semantic features were analysized.The result of experiment proved semantic features can become the different knowledge to supporting design.The cognitive context structure of semantic features and problem solution strategies were extracted and integrated into the context and process model.Finally,the prototype system of SFC-ICAID(Internet & Computer Aided Industrial Design System based on Semantic Feature Cognition)is developed.The reaserch included system frame construction,the main function modules and platform construction.The system is a middle system,which is bridge between software tools in micro system and design platform in macro system through aiding by knowledge.The system has four modules: project management,case retrieval,case analysis and case modification.Those modules were constructed based on the context and process model of Semantic Feature Cognition,which can provide tools to aide CNC machine tools forming design.There is good effect on market to design of machine tools.It proves the rationality and effectiveness of the theoretical research and system.
