The development level of machine tool industry is an important measurementindex for a country’s manufacturing capability and modernization of industry. With itsrapid development in recent60years, the technology level of Chinese machine toolindustry has made great progress. However, it does not have any other advantagesexcept for its large production. To improve the technology level of Chinese machinetool industry to a large extent, industrial design which has a weak path dependence, isan easier means compared with technological innovation. At present, the traditionalfunction-oriented design and development of machine tools’ has transformed to acoordination of function and shape. The competition over shape design in theinternational machine tool products market in recent years is very fierce, and allmanufacturers try to use modeling to highlight the inherent value and mold productsfamilies with distinct characters.This thesis, with both theoretical and practical significance, originates from anindustry-university-research cooperation program (also a commissioned designprogram) presided over by the author, which conducts an exploratory research on waysof demonstrating the inherent value, elevating the aesthetic quality and molding theshape recognition of machine tools.Firstly, this thesis begins with a survey of both target product and rival product,which contains a detailed analysis and research of their respective modeling, color,material technics and ergonomics. Through analysis of tacit characteristics ofenterprises such as their distinctive brand culture and philosophy, and the current trendin machine tool’s products modeling design, the design orientation of the targetproduct is made clear.Secondly, this thesis presents the entire products development process, whichincludes the layout design, two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design,engineering design and prototype trial-production. Through analysis of typical designand development of machine tools enterprises, this thesis establishes the dominantcharacteristics of products’ modeling and demonstrates approaches of elevating theaesthetic quality of machine tools through industrial design means.Finally, this thesis puts forward a design of a series of machine tools through itsanalysis of product family design and induction of dominant modeling characters of machine tools, which contributes to realize the technological target of moldingproducts families with distinct characters of their manufacturers.
