This paper aims to study the culture of 'Environmental Art and Design in China'(EADC)of the Republic of China,in the time period between 1911 and 1949.To be clear, this article endeavours to discuss the EADC concept, which is believed to be formed in the 1980's,and its effects in emerging demands of improving the living environment in the age of development of Chinese contemporary society. This thesis can also be interpreted as a study analysing the development of the urban environmental construction during the period of the Republic of China from the cultural perspective of the modern environmental art design. To achieve this,my study places an emphasis on the developed urban environments because of the more wealth and colour of life offered these environments, especially in major cities such as Beijing,Nanjing, and Shanghai. These had been relatively well-constructed and developed during this time, and are regarded as a crucial indicator of leading EADC trends in urban development of the Republic of China. This EADC culture study is not limited to a specific area, but on much more boarder and wider concepts. In order to seek the primary principles and rules from a variety of phenomenas across the field, the study areas often refer to the following tow major areas:Public Urban Environment(which includes public administrative region environment and public commercial environment)and Living Environment(which includes community environment and private environment). The overall research will follow the course of historical development, analyse the developments of social culture, interpret the evolution of humanistic thoughts, and focus strongly on these effects and influences on the later urban environment. In the processes of development within China's modern cultural system,Western civilisation increasingly permeated the boundaries of the Chinese people. The question of how to adopt western cultural influences and preserve Chinese traditional values was and still is crucial. Therefore,to analyse the collision of East and West is the key to study of EADC during the period of the Republic of China.:under the influence of 'the introduction of West leaning to the East',the development of Chinese modern urban environment experiences from Chinese-style Westernisation to a fusion of Chinese and Western process, which reflected the external and internal forces of common effects by the time.In order to clarify the complex phenomenons in the developments of environment construction in the period of the Republic of China,to explore these cultural collision courses between the east and the west at the time, this paper strives to explore the different ways of how various social groups of people's thoughts and involvements in the practices affected the perspective of 'People-oriented' design research during the time. The major social groups can be divided into three parts:the government administrative, the designer creatives, and'reviewers',represented by social production groups and the masse. These different groups are components of the social culture and are the direct participants and users of urban environment formation and development at the time.Due to the concept of EADC forming within the last 50 years,,we need to go back to the historical time to study various living environments of social development,in order to trace back sequences of thoughts in design philosophy,To avoid misinterpretation in this content, the term EADC is only a reference term defines in this paper alone.
