PurposeThe study of Chinese scalp needles was first seen in the middle and late 1950s,and was first introduced by a Western medicine doctor called Dr.Fang Yunpeng, who selflessly promoted his research in the late 1960s.Since the 1960s,there has been many Chinese inventors of scalp acupuncture. The most influential inventors being Dr.Fang Yunpeng,Dr.Jiao Shun Fa,and Dr.Tang Song Yan.The pioneer being Dr.Fong, with his "Fang's Scalp Acupuncture Technique",which then gave birth to the a more simiplied version invented by Dr.Jiao Shun Fa with his "Jiao' s Scalp Acupuncture Technique",then Dr.Tang Song Yan,who was a Chinese doctor, further developed it to include a central dividing point on the scalp that divides the head into two,one Yin and one Yang region with his "Tang' s Scalp Acupuncture Technique".In the early 1980s,Dr.Yamato' s research can be described as an integration of China's scalp acupuncture researches, which deepens and broadens the development of the scalp acupuncture. His research takes the essence of Fang,Jiao, and Tang, and the essence of traditional acupuncture and moxibustion. His later work in 2008 combines the anatomy of the human brain discovered by the West, with the Scalp Needling Techniques discovered by the East.It is closely related to the theories and clinical experience of acupoints from modern medicine, which is an academic subject worthy of study.ResearchIn the 1950s,the discovery of the Cerebral Cortex Functional Positioning Theory gave the Chinese surgeon Fang Yunpeng a clearer definition of his knowledge of the human brain which allowed him to be the pioneer of Scalp Acupuncture.Having a keen interest in acupuncture,Dr.Fang Yunpeng, understood the main principle of acupuncture treatment.Acupuncture points can be stimulated through the meridian which passes the organs,to clear the blood and adjust the function of the organs.Direct acupuncture on the organs is not necessary as sickness can be cured from performing acupuncture in distal acupoints."Historical Records-Bian Que warehouse public biography" also recorded that more than two thousand years ago,the practise of placing needles in the head was used to cure stroke patients,so in the late 50s,with an enhanced knowledge of the human brain,Dr.Fang Yunpeng began to study scalp acupuncture.Fang is a Western medicine surgeon,so the positioning method is focused on the anatomy of the bone mass of the skull and intracranial structure of the surface projection, while emphasizing the feelings of the doctor's fingers. In modern acupuncture and moxibustion, the degree of bisector positioning method and body surface Anatomical positioning method,is most commonly used to confirm the acupoints.Different schools of positioning methods have different standards, but different ways will affect the positioning accuracy, the result is the ability to cure diseases.Fang' s concept focuses on the brain stimulus areas, organs' location on the scalp,as well as Yin and Yang.He depict the Yin and Yang regions using eight human figures on the scalp, the front being Yin and the back being Yang.Jiao is the first person to simplify scalp acupuncture and the first to promote scalp acupuncture publicly in a large scale.Because his technique is easy to master, the Chinese Acupuncture Society designated the "Jiao Scalp Acupuncture Technique" as the international standardization. In May 1984,in the World Health Organization West Pacific District Acupuncture standardization meeting also adopted the "Jiao Scalp Acupuncture Technique"as the international standardization. He uses the concept of point of extension into the gland, instead of Fang's stimulus area concept. With each point of extension referring to one specific brain region and function.Tang then further developed a method that divides the scalp into 2 sections.Divided by the acupoint(GV20),which he believes is the center spot that can divide the scalp into two equal parts, one side is the head facing forward, the other side is the back of the head facing backwards. With the front being Yin,that is used to treat Yin sickness and the back being Yang, used to treat Yang sickness. After the 1970s,each of the scalp acupuncture theories blossomed, but mainly the simplified theory, developed by Dr.Jiao Shun Fa,and the theory developed by Dr.Tang Song Yan,that divides the human head with a Yin side and a Yang side from a central point on the top of the head.Japanese neurosurgeon,Dr.Yamamoto Toshikatsu, claimed to have read a report on Chinese scalp acupuncture, began to develop his Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture,YNSA.From close examining his nearly 40 years of research,it appears that Dr.Yamamoto' s early research was highly influenced by the theories developed by Dr.Fang,Dr.Jiao,and Dr.Tang.Until in 2008,Dr.Yamamoto came up with an innovative scalp acupuncture theory that matches the 12 pairs of brain peripheral nerves with the 12 pairs of meridians in traditional Chinese acupuncture.MethodTo compare the theories of Chinese medicine and scalp acupuncture physicians and the theory of Japanese scalp acupuncture, using published medical literatures for basic research, and traditional Chinese acupuncture principals to find clues to reveal the effectiveness of the Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture. The three main principals of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture are:-1)Meridians has to pass through the organ that the sickness is originated from.2)The treatment areas of the acupoint.3)The relationship between the organs. The use of traditional Chinese acupuncture on the meridian theories coupled with the modern brain study, can reveal much in the effectiveness, similarities and differences of China' s scalp theories and Japan's Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture, and to discover newer, more effective ways to cure sickness.ResultsThe early days of Japan's Dr.Yamamoto' s research was heavily influenced by the theories of the Chinese scalp acupuncture. His new method, the study of medical-related neurology has converged on the trend of TCM meridian theories, such as the 12 pairs of peripheral nerves of the brain and the 12 pairs of meridians of the Chinese medicine, matching the nerve of the neck and abdomen as a reference for clinical disease, etc.,is worthy of discussing analysis. When re-examined its apex in the skull and the temporal bone on both sides of a total of 8 groups of holographic organs, the results of the order of Dr.Yamamoto is better. However,at the same time, there is no reason to believe that Dr.Yamamoto has correctly matched the twelve pairs of brain peripheral nerve with the 12 pairs of Chinese meridians. He has made an error at 3 Yin Meridians:1)Olfactory Sensory(I):nose-was matched incorrectly with the Kidney Meridian. It should be matched with the Lung Meridian.2)Vestibulocochlear Sensory(VIII):inner ear-was matched incorrectly with the Spleen Meridian. It should be matched with the Kidney Meridian.3)Glossopharyngeal(IX)Motor:Pharyngeal musculature,Sensory:Posterior Part of tongue,tonsil,pharynx-was matched incorrectly with the Lung Meridian. It should be matched with the Spleen Meridian. The reason of his errors is because he is not familiar with the basic theories of Traditional Chinese medicine of the kidney and the ears, and lungs resuscitated in the nose.Although Dr.Yamamoto is in his old age,he is still a relentless researcher that deserves much admiration. His new method allowed an intergration between China,Japan and the West, and opens doors to innovation.Whether Dr.Yamamoto's new technique on the 12 pairs of brain peripheral nerve matching the 12 pairs of Chinese meridians,or the Chinese Scalp Acupuncture Theories is better,it is still debatable and it is up to the future of clinical research to carry on.
