On Narrative Space Of The Novel

In the context of "spatial turn" of humanities and social sciences,spatial research of literary narrative has become a hot topic.Facing the numerous and complicated perspectives,the paper firstly avoid the geography,philosophy and metaphorical study of narrative space,because the purposes and objects of these studies have great differences with the real sense of narrative space research.I tried to explain narrative space in the two levels——media space and fictional space of narrative.Although space is also a "psychological form",it is more specific understanding of the entity than the time of.From existential sense of space,the physical and psychological existences should be two main cognitive level of narrative space,which could give a more comprehensive understanding of the narrative space.So this paper is divided into two parts—the media space research and the fictional space analysis of narrative.Literary narrative is undergoing spatial turn in practical and theoretical levels.First part start form the awakening of media consciousness of literary study to explore the reasons for media studies ignored the possibility of literary media studies.The media narrative research should from the oral era of literary narrative to present,which means the study including the three proportions:oral media,paper media and electronic media.When people use a media in long-term practice,we can find the border of the media,that is,narrative possibilities of the media.For the novel,the modern and postmodern fiction means the peak of techniques and skills of novel.They both have succession and rebellion of the tradition,which also includes the maximum range and demarcation of print media for the narrative.Of course,these works is"weird" in traditional ideas.In the paper media,the narrative has gone through three stages to break the linear narrative limitation.The early imitation of practical genus comes through the diary and epistle.they are "intimate" to the narrative.But the dictionary and commentary genus has purely nothing to do with the narrative.These"anti-narrative" styles used directly to break the conventional linear narrative.However,this narrative genus is still subject to some constraints.to break all these constraints,then it come forth carnival of narrative——poker novel.Chaos in the form of appearance,the traditional sense of the narrative is subversively depleted.This attempt has not been recognized by readers long time.No one will ever read an endless novel.Poker fiction is an innovative form,more like a stunt.Narrative seems to still need some rules,and then the reader may grasp it.Some fictions begin to take some narrative rules which can be recognized and mastered.Such as chemical periodic table,geometry,etc.,it is worth to notice that these rules control the narrative by image model.This is the precursor of pictorial invasion into the narrative.Finally,image comes into the narrative by rhetorical or descriptive ways,like narrative words,as an integral part of the novel.By these practices,the modern narrative is approach the edge of the narrative text step by step,and then the word itself will fall into the trap of the image.But with the recent popularity of computer utility,the hypertext narrative emerges after the 1990s,which seems to bring new life to the literal narrative.However,hypertext novel is not so fit for the narrative in reading and writing,whether creation or researching has not a deeper level breakthrough.Film narrative and virtual narrative is taking away the space of hypertext narrative.At this point,the possibility of the literal narrative in the paper and electronic media has ended.Perhaps some new form of narrative is brewing.The second part of the paper focus on the fictional space of novel.The media is a kind of physical space,and then the fictional space is the subjective spatial cognition of author or reader.I try to dissertate from the dynamic spatial continuity and analysis of static space respectively.All the space in the novel always manifest by actions by some subjects,which means that each subject in the novel should occupy a certain spatial location,his control presents a different kind of state of the fictional space.On the basis on narrative subject,spatial continuity can be divided into two types:action continuity from the subject of acts and perspective continuity from the subject of view.As is usually based on the novel sequence of linear narrative text,it does not exist the full sense of the "static" in the novel,even if the static description presents dynamic effects in"forced perspective".In the unfolding of continuity of space,changes of perspective will break the continuity into fragmented narrative space.The shift of narrative space also shows great freedom.Literary narrative is made by the rhythm of continuity and fragments in space.On the other hand,static analysis of the fictional space focuses on spatial appearance and spatial structure.It must base on a certain integrity understanding of narrative text or paragraph.This analysis can be expressed as an image or map of cognitive effects.However,the spatial information of narrative text is often inadequate or not unified.It needs some kind of reference to try to restore the author's spatial cognition,which should be an effective way.The appearance of space at different times,different ethnic groups have different ways of describing,and there is no uniform aesthetics standard.The description and understanding of spatial appearance is a preliminary or partial perceptual experience of the narrative space,and therefore only the spatial structure or spatial relationship is stable spatial essence which is difficult to find.Spatial structure consists of two factors:maps and routes.Whether the structure is come from the reality,the special fictionality of literary narrative is worth to discuss when space is combined with action of characters.In addition,the spatial structures of the open and closed also show a regularity of the last evolution of the trend.The decline of textual narrative with the rise of pictorial narrative,this is perhaps a prelude to the era of poetry.But no matter how the narrative develops.The space cannot be neglected,which is the inevitable choice of narrative practices and narrative theory.
