Research On The Farming Poems In The Tang Dynasty

The farming poem of Tang Dynasty refers to the poem which describes agriculture together with political and religious activities which are directly connected with agriculture.Among Tang poems,the distinctive farming poem is an essential part.The agriculture-oriented social life makes the farming poem,a direct product of Tang' s society,economy and culture one of the most historical and cultural poem of Tang poems.These works also give a more direct picture of Tang' s economy,thought and material life,revealing the physical root of Chinese people' s spirit and aesthetics.Researchers usually limit their attention to the pastoral poem when studying the farming poem.However,the farming poem is by no means the traditional pastoral poem.Despite their similarity,they shouldn' t be treated as the same kind of poem.Based on the above knowledge,the thesis studies the farming poem in Tang' s social,political,economic and cultural context and carefully uses poems to illustrate with the help of abundant documents.The creation of Tang' s farming poem and some related issues will be systematically discussed through philological methods,the combination of text analysis and historical reference and the combination of individual and overall study.The thesis includes four parts.Part I is an introduction.Part II is a pandect.Part III is a monograph and part IV is an appendix.There' re eight chapters in the body part of the thesis.The introduction part focuses on a literature review of Tang' s framing poem.It also assesses the value and the meaning of those current studies.Chapter 1 Tang' s Agriculture Civilization and the Creation of the Poetry is a pandect.By interpreting the concept of farming poem,offering a general picture of Tang' s farming poem and examining the author,the amount of works and the content,the chapter gives two themes of Tang' s farming poems.The monologue covers from chapter two to chapter three,explaining the origin,content and artistic expression of each kind of Tang' s farming poem according to its categories.Poems from chapter four to chapter eight belong to the theme of cultivating and living;Poems from chapter six to chapter eight belong to the theme of folk culture.The following is a brief summary of each chapter.Chapter two is The Study of Farming Poem.Through the farming details displayed in the farming poem,the thesis explores Tang' s lands selection and its utilization,introduces the farming tools,irrigation tools and processing tools and lists Tang' s grains,vegetables,medicines and tea to show every aspect of Tang' s agriculture.Chapter three is The Study of Collection Poem.The culture of collection can be traced back to long time ago.At first,the aim of collection is mainly for basic survival.Later,it evolved into an assist to the agriculture,making an essential part of the folklore.The chapter first analyzes collections and poems of collection which are prior to Tang Dynasty,paying attention to mulberry leaf lotus picking to show the popularity of Tang' s collection.Finally,the chapter learns the collection of other plants together with their creation.Chapter four is The Study of Peasants-Sympathizing Poem.This chapter explains the creation of those sympathizing poems in Pre-Tang dynasty poem and the change of the poems in Tang.It also explores the reason of the poems' the prosperity in post Tang dynasty and concludes the theme of Tang' s peasants-sympathizing poem.Chapter five is The Study of the Celebration Farming Poem,illustrating the theme,the content and advantages of the poems'artistic expression.Chapter six is The Study of Poems of Raining Appreciation.Such raining appreciation originates from the raining-praying.In the ancient agricultural society,farmers depend on heaven for food.There' s a close relation between the harvest and the weather condition.Since a severe drought will dry the plants to death,people have prayed for rain since Pre-Qin period.This chapter first illustrates the cultural connotation of the rain and then presents the birth and development of poems of raining appreciation before Tang Dynasty.Meanwhile,it explores the background of the poem's creation.By comparing the official poems and Du Fu's poems,the thesis shows different emotions towards the rain between Tang's government and its people.Chapter seven is The Study of Poems of Resign and Home-Returning.The chapter first studies the origin of home-returning poems of pre-Qin period,Han Dynasty and Wei,Jin,Northern and Southern Dynasties.Then it analyzes the ideological roots and social reasons of the creation of Tang' s home-returning poem,pointing out detailed content of the poem.Chapter eight is The Study of She Ri Poem.As an important part of agriculture,She Ri(sacrifice things to God)reflects the culture of cultivation and sacrifice.This chapter discusses the origin and development of She Ri and why poets
