Based on the study of inheritance and development of Shanghai Paper-cut Art, this paper analyzes the features of Shanghai Paper-cut Art as traditional folk culture which is created and developed in modern Shanghai city via the aspects as follows:origin and heritage, the protection mechanism, expression and style, metropolis characteristics and Shanghai culture, inheritance dilemma and strategies, etc.This paper devides the development of Shanghai Paper-cut Art into four stages. The first is pre-origin stage from year 1930 to 1950. This first stage mainly introduces the very beginning situation of Shanghai Paper-cut Art. The second is origin stage from year 1950 to 1980. In this part it describes how Shanghai Paper-cut Art gradually developed as a local representative art form by two originators:Wang Zi-gan and Lin Xi-ming. The third one is development stage from year 1980 to 2007. Through this period Shanghai Paper-cut Art had firmly established as the representative of Shanghai local culture by joint effort of inheritors. The fourth one is intangible cultural heritage stage from year 2007 to 2016. By this section it analyzes the protection and development of Shanghai Paper-cut Art as first batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage. It also summarizes the transmission spectrum, the chronicle of events for the inheritors, and the representative inheritance bases. It points out the uniqueness of Shanghai Paper-cut Art through Shanghai culture.The research concludes the current protection system of Shanghai Paper-cut Art in aspects of heritage protection forms, conservation organizations, inheritance modes. It introduces the artistic characteristics of Shanghai Paper-cut Art relatively by each inheritor and inheritance base. By comparing the similarities and differences, it generalizes the diversity of style and feature for Shanghai Paper-cut Art.In this paper it analyzes the connection between Shanghai Paper-cut Art and urban cultural environment of Shanghai. Moreover, it concludes the urban features represented in Shanghai Paper-cut Art via two aspects:the specificity of native folk within urban cultural enviroment, urban memory and inheritance significance.The paper also discusses the main dilemma for inheritance and development of Shanghai Paper-cut Art. Last but not least, this paper expects the perspective and strategies of Shanghai Paper-cut Art by exploring urban developing modes, Culture Place as intangible cultural heritage, the diversity of urban innovation forms, and cultural memory system of intangible cultural heritage. Thus, it tries to achieve the aim of searching the feasible options for Shanghai Paper-cut Art's next ten-year sustainable development.
