Driving fatigue is a kind of operating fatigue that derived from human-computer interaction.Driving fatigue was mainly caused by driving tasks. When drivers getting more and more fatigued, their performance of driving fatigue was significantly changed. There are two kinds of fatigue related to driving task:active fatigue and passive fatigue.Due to the application of adaptive cruise technique, drivers' mental workload was lower, but they still need some efforts to maintain their driving performance during which passive fatigue was generated. With the improvement of automatic technique, more attention was paid to passive fatigue.Base on the summary of previous theoretical and empirical research on driving fatigue, this paper discussed the nature of driving fatigue and classification standards of passive fatigue and active fatigue.Combing field study and laboratory study, this paper aimed to systematically measure passive fatigue by using physiological, psychological and performance index. Also, this paper intended to explore the predictors of passive fatigue. This study is not only of great theoretical significance to promote the in-depth understanding of the fatigue mechanism, but also can improve the prediction index system of driving fatigue. It also had some implications for guiding the applications of automated driving technology.Study 1 revised the Chinese version of Dundee stress state scale.362 drivers finished the Dundee stress state scale after it was translated into Chinese. The structure of the scale was analyzed through exploratory analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability and validity of the scale was further calculated, aiming to provide a valid tool for measuring driving fatigue.Study 2 explored the stress states of drivers(N=109)caused by different driving task in real driving scene. Two driving conditions, namely city road and highway, were used to examine whether they can caused driving fatigue and the difference of psychological behaviors of drivers. This study can help understand the nature of driving fatigue and provide scientific evidence for fatigue classification. On the other hand, this paper further focused on passive fatigue by tacking driving performance of long distance coach drivers(N=30)for about 9 hours and explored the physiological feature of passive fatigue and the relationship between passive fatigue and drivers'subjective reports of fatigue.Study 3 used driving simulator to induce active fatigue and passive fatigue in the laboratory and examined the drivers' psychological, physiological and behavior difference of active and passive fatigue(N=63).Combining previous findings, this study systematically analyzed the characteristics of passive fatigue and calculated the threshold of passive fatigue.Based on the analysis and discussion of the results of the three studies, the conclusions were as following:1,The revised Chinese version of Dundee stress state scale has good reliability and validity and it can be used as a valid tool to measure Chinese drivers' driving fatigue.2,Driving fatigue is a kind of passive fatigue, which is characterized by lacking of workload. Therefore, active fatigue and passive fatigue are divided according to the overload or deficiency of work load.3,Subjective report of driving fatigue does not necessarily lead to the loss of driving performance. Therefore,it is necessary to take driving environment and the nature of the driving task into consideration when discussed the relationship between subjective fatigue and driving performance.4,Passive fatigue is characterized by a significant decline in workload, task involvement and anxiety, and active fatigue is characterized by increased pain and workload.5,Passive fatigue can impair driving performance more than active fatigue. The feature of passive fatigue appeared earlier then active fatigue too. Therefore, researchers should pay more attention to passive fatigue.6,VLF is an appropriate index to predict driving fatigue. When drivers' VLF reached 1440.7 ms2,they are probable in the state of passive fatigue.
